How to open djvu extension. How to open a djvu file on a computer? Six programs for editing and reading. How to open a djvu file - a closer look

Hi all. If you are wondering how to open DJVU files on your computer, then you are in the right place. Today I will show you 3 good programs for working with books in DJVU format. All you have to do is choose the one you like the most.

To open the DJVU file use the program WinDjView, Djvu reader or STDU Viewer. Now I’ll tell you about them in more detail and provide download links.

WinDjView program

After installation and launch, you can try opening any books in the WinDjView format. To do this, click the File – Open menu and specify the location of the book on your computer.

Djvu reader program

In STDU Viewer, click the File – Open menu and select a book.

If you know any other cool programs that can be used to open a DJVU file on a computer, then be sure to write about them. I will definitely download them and try them!

P.S. Interesting fact: if we literally translate the name of the DjVu format from French, it will be “déjà vu,” which translated into Russian means “already seen.”

Good afternoon, dear readers! Today we will talk about e-books, or more precisely, about one of the e-book formats. Today the most common extensions are PDF, FB2, TR, LIT, etc. We all know how to work with them, how to open them, everything is brought to an automatic level. But when we encounter the DJVU format, the question arises, what to do in such a situation. I will answer this question in this article.

Personally, I distinguish two ways to work with this format. The first is to install a converter and simply convert the DJVU format into any other, for example FB2 or PDF. And the second one is to install special program, with which we can easily work with this format. Today we will look at both methods, and you decide for yourself which one you will use.

Perhaps, let's start with special programs for working with DJVU, and finish with a converter!

How to open DJVU, DJVU reader

In fact, DJVU has already become quite a popular and well-known format. Consequently, there are a lot of programs for working with this format. I don’t see the point in considering all the programs, since one is more than enough. Today we will look at only one program - DJVU Reader, but for those who want to delve deeper into this matter I will give the names of two more popular programs: WinDjView and STDU Viewer.

DJVU Reader Installation Instructions

You can download the DJVU format reader by clicking. Next, the downloaded archive must be unpacked into any folder using any archiver, for example WinRAR. To do this, right-click on the folder inside the archive and select “Extract to specified folder.”

Now open the program using the shortcut you created on your desktop. In essence, a blank gray sheet will open. The only thing that will stand out is the “File” button in the main menu:

Since this is the only available button, then we will use it! Click on “File” and select “Open”, or use the hotkey CTRL + O. Then, using the dialog box, select the book itself in DJVU format and open it! After this, the book itself will be loaded into the program. In my case, the program interface began to look like this:

Using the “+” and “-” buttons, you can respectively increase and decrease the image of the book (font, etc.), and use the “Forward” and “Back” arrows to turn pages. These are the main functions of the program, which are already enough to read books.

But this program only works on computers. If you have any mobile device, then you can use the CoolReader program there (it supports reading not only FB2, PDF and others, but also DjVu as well).

Now let's look at a converter that can be used to convert DJVU to PDF.

Unfortunately, there are currently no normal, powerful DJVU to FB2 converters. And those that exist are weak and it will take a very long time to wait for the translation of 500 pages. Therefore, today we will look at the DJVU to PDF converter, since it turned out to be more successful!

First we need to download a special program DjView. Then open the archive and run boot file. The program has a simple installation wizard, so there can be no problems here.

After installation, a shortcut will be automatically created on your desktop. Run the program, the following window will open:

We are interested in one single function of this program - converting DjVu to PDF. First, we need to download the book itself in DjVu format. To do this, in the main menu at the top, select “File” -> “Open”, and then select the desired book in DjVu format in the dialog box. After the book is downloaded, the program interface will be updated:

Now let's move directly to the conversion. Again, select “File” from the menu at the top, but this time click on “Export...”. In the “Result” panel we find the “Format” line. The “PDF Document” item should be selected there:

Then click “OK” and wait for the conversion to complete. Fortunately, you won't have to wait long, the program is quite powerful. After conversion, it will appear in the destination folder PDF format!

Mission accomplished!

The DjVu file format is in demand among users today, as it allows you to save a large amount of information with a small volume and sufficient good quality. However, to open such files, special software is required, which can also be replaced with some online services.

For the most part, online services have very limited functionality when compared with full-fledged software created specifically for opening DjVu. Based on this, if you have the opportunity, it is best to use the DjVu Reader program.

Method 1: rollMyFile

This online service can rightfully be called the best among similar resources that allow you to open files directly in your Internet browser. This is due to the fact that rollMyFile supports several hundred different formats, without requiring registration or additional cash costs to view them.

  1. On home page service, drag the file to be opened in DjVu format into the central area of the window. In the same way, the document can be downloaded by clicking the button "Choose" and indicating its location on the computer.

It will take some time to download the document, and its progress can be tracked on the same page of the site.

  2. After completion, click on the button "Open it now" to view the file.

During the download process you will be presented with hints on how to use the service.

Note: Currently, the site may experience difficulties loading a new window, which can be easily resolved by using any convenient VPN.

  3. When the DjVu document is opened, its contents will appear in the main area of the window.

The online service provides a considerable amount additional features, making it much easier to view the file.

The document can be modified and saved.

The service allows you to process small files as quickly as possible, while difficulties may arise with large documents. This is especially noticeable at low Internet connection speeds.

Method 2: Ofoct

Unlike the first service reviewed, Ofoct provides a minimal number of features that boil down solely to viewing the desired file. However, this may well be enough to open and study a DjVu document in the shortest possible time.

  1. Opening the page, on the tab "Open" click on the button "Upload" and select required document on PC. You can simply drag and drop a file into this area.

The download waiting time directly depends on the file size and can be reduced if you use a link to the document rather than adding it from your computer.

  2. After completion of unloading in the column "Options" select the most suitable quality option.
  3. Now in the last column click on the link "View".

The content itself may take a long time to load. Especially if you selected the mode "High Resolution".

  4. As soon as the processing of the DjVu document is completed, the content inside the file will appear in a special window on the site.

Additional capabilities are limited to changing the scale and expanding to full-screen viewing mode.

This resource is convenient because in addition to downloading a file from your computer, you can start opening it using a direct link. This is especially convenient in cases where you need to open a fairly large document.

The DjVu file format typically uses the .djvu extension and was developed as an alternative to the Adobe PDF in 1996. Thanks to advanced compression algorithms, DjVu is optimized for scanned documents that contain both images and text. In most cases, DjVu files are more compact than comparable PDF files. This was the short answer to your question. However, most likely you came to this page because you recently came across a DjVu file and wondered how to open it. Therefore, the first part of this article will provide you with all the tools and algorithms to open a DjVu file. But if you also want to have a deeper understanding about DjVu, you have come to the right place: The second part of this article will provide you with historical and technical background background information about this interesting file format, so stay tuned!

There are basically two ways to access a DjVu file. If you're looking for a quick and dirty solution, you can convert it to PDF and open it with your favorite tool PDF viewer such as Acrobat reader:
  • 1. To convert any DjVu file to PDF, you can directly use our converter DjVu to PDF.
  • 2. If you prefer to install software to view DjVu directly, on the other hand, you may be interested in our updated list of DjVu players.
To convert DjVu, we recommend using an online converter. Installing an offline converter is not worth the effort as you can directly switch to the DjVu player, allowing you to enjoy all the benefits of DjVu. In fact, there are several good reasons to choose the second option. Maybe the rest of the article will convince you of this.

Best DjVu Players

Conversion is always accompanied by quality losses, unless, of course, you are ready to put up with output files larger than the source document. Since DjVu documents are quite similar to PDFs and are even searchable in many cases (which is often forgotten), and perhaps sticking to the original document while choosing a suitable player would be a good choice. There is a range of DjVu players for almost everyone operating systems, available on the Internet, a small part of which is presented here briefly:

Sumatra Reader (with DjVu support)

Sumatra Reader is one of the lesser known DjVu players available for Windows. Compared to other alternatives presented here, it not only allows you to open and view DjVu files, but also supports basic operations for processing and editing them. So it's probably best choice for working with DjVu on Windows.

DjView

DjView is a good DjVu player that is available free for operating systems. Windows systems, Linux and Mac. It allows you to search DjVu documents and can show an outline of the document and thumbnail images of specific pages.

WinDjView, MacDjView

Another useful tool, which offers roughly the same functionality as DjView. It also allows you to select and copy text using your cursor, much like working with a PDF document. Also user interface very similar to most PDF players. The names already imply that the software is available for Windows and MacOs.

STDU Viewer

STDU Viewer is free (for non-commercial and educational use) and a powerful tool document viewer that also supports DjVu. The software is available in different languages. It does a great job with files that have a text layer and can therefore be useful if you want to export simple text from DjVu and other supported documents.

X Djvu for iPhone and iPad

Yes, you can read DjVu documents using your iPhone! X Djvu - useful application which allows you to read DjVu documents from using iPhone or iPad and offers many different functions. A smaller version of X Djvu Lite can be downloaded for free for testing.

Ebookdroid - document reader for Android

You want to read your DjVu documents on your Android smartphone. No problem! There are many free document players available that allow you to open DjVu files on Android. A good one is, for example, Ebookdroid, which also supports PDF. Installation is very easy via the Google App Store.

Where did the DjVu file format come from?

The DjVu format was developed as an alternative to the PDF format in 1998 at AT&T Labs, where some pioneering inventions such as the transistor were made. The main contributors to the development of DjVu were Yann LeCun, Leon Bottu, Patrick Haffner and Paul G. Howard, and the leading idea behind the development of DjVu was to create a file format that is optimized for scanned documents that contain both images and text. The key requirement here was that new format file works better than PDF for this type of document. Key advantage DjVu is a limited size of DjVu files. Therefore, it is often used to distribute scanned documents online. Unlike PDF, this format open file, which means it can be used as either open source or proprietary software. The DjVu format usually uses the extension .djvu or sometimes just .djv.

Why are DjVu files special?

DjVu files use advanced compression technologies that are approximately 5-10 times better than JPEG files and Tiff. A scanned page in color (300 DPI resolution) with a file size of, say, about 25 MB, can easily be compressed to 100 KB (!) using DjVu. All DjVu files can be equipped with a text layer, which will make them searchable. These searchable DjVu files are very similar to PDF documents. The key to achieving this superior compression is so-called multi-scale two-color clustering, which allows the separation of foreground and background masks, which is more general than standard text/image segmentation. Along with a suite of soft template matching algorithms, the JBIG2 compression that DjVu uses outperforms the JBIG1 compression that has been the standard for bilayer images for a long time. The JBIG2 encoding principle is as follows: First, the method identifies nearly identical shapes on a page, such as multiple occurrences of a particular character in a given font, style, and size. It then compresses the bitmap of each unique shape separately and then encodes the locations where each shape appears on the page. Likewise, similar shapes are compressed only once rather than multiple times, which explains the advantage in terms of file size that DjVu files typically show. Other key components of the compression technique used by DjVu are the multi-scale sequential projection algorithm and the so-called ZP encoder.

DjVu files with hidden OCR layers

It is still possible to think of DjVu files as a loose collection of bitmap images that do not contain searchable text information and are therefore difficult to process. So, we need to get used to the fact that PDF is an undeniably prettier format? Of course not! The DjVu authors were smart enough to find a clever job here: to make DjVu files searchable, and to be similar to PDF files, they added a hidden layer of OCR to the file format definition. This is a very economical way of providing searchable textual information on the one hand, and a strict separation between visual appearance document and content that can be viewed by the reader. Most DjVu files that are distributed on the Internet contain such a text layer. The main difference between DjVu and PDF is that the DjVu format is a raster image format, whereas the PDF format is a scalable vector file format. This trick even allows you to easily copy and paste text from any DjVu that is equipped with a layer like the one used to work with PDF files. Licensing and adaptation of DjVu DjVu appeared first as an open source incarnation that was called "DjVuLibre" and used the GNU General Public License. However, copy rights to commercial coding software designs have been assigned to several various companies over the years, including AT&T Corporation, LizardTech, Celartem and others. Although PDF is used more often than DjVu, despite some experts believing that DjVu is actually a better document format due to superior compression algorithms, DjVu has achieved a significant level of adoption due to this open source licensing. Since DjVu was developed at the peak of the digitization era when many books were scanned, many people still use DjVu to scan documents and books over the Internet. Additionally, in 2002, the Internet Archive, with its million-dollar book project, which provides millions of public domain scanned books, also decided to support DjVu along with PDF.

Technical characteristics of DjVu files

DjVu was originally derived from the Interchange File Format (IFF), which is based on hierarchically organized chunks. As with IFF, its structure is preceded by a 4-byte AT&T magic number. This identifier is followed by a marker indicating whether to make a single-page document (DJVU) or a multi-page document (DJVM), respectively. A more detailed discussion is undoubtedly beyond the scope of this article. Another important specification, however, is the Internet mime type for DjVu - image/vnd.djvu or image/x-djvu. Current version DjVu - version 26, released more than 10 years ago.

The future of DjVu

Despite the fact that recent years not much progress was made in DjVu development, the number of DjVu files released eventually increased again. This may be due to the most compelling benefit of DjVu files, namely their incredibly compact file size. In those times when world wide web more and more used mobile devices, A throughput While still a cost factor, using DjVu's superior compression can help save time and money. Meanwhile, there are also applications that can be used to display DjVu files on smartphones and tablets. Of course, this is pure speculation, but perhaps DjVu's future could be brighter than its past. In fact, the name DjVu conveys some kind of hidden message, as it is inspired by the French expression DjVu [déjà vu], which means something like “already seen.” Since you are now familiar with DjVu, you can be absolutely sure that you will see it again very soon as long as you live in the Internet world.

WinDjView is a fast and convenient program for viewing DjVu files under Windows with document tabs, continuous page scrolling and advanced printing capabilities. It is based on the freely available DjVuLibre library. The DjVu format allows you to save documents and pictures from high quality into small files.

MacDjView is simple program for viewing DjVu files under Mac OS X, also with continuous page scrolling.

WinDjView and MacDjView are free software. You may redistribute them and/or modify them under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the Agreement or (at your option) any later version.
