Now we go to the folder where we unpacked the downloaded firmware and transfer the “.hd” format file to “usbprns2.exe”. The MFP should reboot. After this, we remove the cartridge from the MFP, then take out the chip (or you can seal it) and put it back in (alternatively, you can simply seal the chip).

This way we will make the MFP think that it is using a starter cartridge. You will have to reset the counter every 700-1000 sheets via the MFP interface.

2. Reflash the printer once and simply remove the chip from the cartridge.

How to flash a Xerox Phaser 3140 printer! Brief instructions.

1. You need to find out the version of the current firmware installed by the manufacturer. To do this, turn on the printer (it is not necessary to connect it to the computer), press the button shown in the picture and hold it until the indicator starts flashing quickly. Release the button and the printer will print a page with information.
2. On the printed sheet we find the line where the firmware version is indicated, approximately line 7 - FirmeWare Version. There may be v1.01.00.75 or v1.01.00.77 without the letter F at the end, if the firmware version ends with F, then this indicates that the printer is already firmware and re-flashing is not required.
3. If you have determined that the firmware version is not older than v1.01.00.77, then download the firmware from the link. Unpack the archive onto your computer.
4. With USB cable We connect the printer to the computer, the printer should be detected and the process of searching and installing drivers begins. We do not install any drivers, but simply refuse and close the installation wizard.
5. After the printer has been detected, go to the folder with the unpacked firmware files and drag the file FIX_ML1910_V1.01.00.77.fls with the mouse - the firmware itself, onto USBPRNS2.EXE - the firmware. We are waiting for the process to finish. If everything is done correctly, the printer will reboot after a while. We print the information page and look at the firmware version. If it has changed, then the firmware was successfully installed.
6. Remove the cartridge and remove or simply seal the chip. We insert it back and try to print something. If everything works, then after you have printed several pages, the counter will count them and display the number on the information sheet. Now you can remove the cartridge and insert it back, the counter should reset to zero and the countdown starts from zero.

Firmware for Xerox printers is a mandatory procedure prior to refilling cartridges.

Without its implementation, it is, of course, possible to refill cartridges for new models, but this will not give the desired result - the device simply will not accept such a consumable. Why does this happen, and what, exactly, is the essence of the Xerox firmware?

Why was there a need for Xerox firmware?

If you go back in time a few years ago - a year or so in 2007, you can note the new approach of the printing equipment manufacturer to protecting its cartridges from refilling. The latter, as you know, does not suit vendors under any “sauce”. At first, cartridges began to be equipped with simple electronic chips that issued an annoying message about the end of the toner. A little later, their functionality was supplemented by the ability to block the operation of the printer/MFP until a new original consumable is inserted. Firmware for Xerox cartridges of this generation was not difficult, and this is how the identified problem was solved. However, it was also possible to completely replace such a chip; fortunately, cloning them was as easy as shelling pears. Well, then the manufacturer got down to business seriously, and the aforementioned decoding of a printer or MFP became impossible: the chips began to be equipped with the most complex cryptographic protection, which could neither be hacked nor blocked. That is, the option of replacing chips also disappeared, because the latter simply did not exist on the market.

It was then that the firmware for Xerox phaser and others like it began its triumphant development, the essence of which was to work not with the chip, but with the software of the printing machine itself.

How to create alternative firmware for a Xerox printer

The process looks something like this: take the original firmware for specific model printer/MFP, its contents are decrypted and subject to some software changes. Ultimately, the corrected version of the Xerox firmware allows the printing machine to do without a chip, or reset it through the menu. It is this that is installed in the device instead of the native original software, and the process of such replacement is precisely what is called flashing Xerox printers.

Xerox Corporation has been stubbornly unlucky with the production of color laser printers entry level. First there was the Xerox Phaser 6110 printer, which was developed by Samsung(CLP-300). Due to a number of technical shortcomings by Samsung engineers, the printer had a whole bunch of malfunctions associated with the image forming unit. Next, the Xerox 6121 printer was released to replace the Phaser 6110. The Xerox 6121 printer was developed by Minolta (the original was called Minolta 1600), but due to gross miscalculations by Minolta engineers, it had a whole bunch of defects associated with the fusing unit and malfunction of the carousel with cartridges. After a series of failures, Xerox released a new printer - the Xerox Phaser 6000. Unlike previous entry-level printer models, this printer was developed by Xerox together with Fuji Xerox. Technically, this printer left far behind its competitors (Minolta 1600/Samsung clp-320).
Despite the fact that these printers are built on absolutely different platforms, they have one general nuance– all these devices have a cartridges without chips. Simply dummies are used as chips. Since starter cartridges cannot contain data on the volume of cartridges and the number of printed pages, this data is usually stored in the printer in non-volatile memory. By analogy with the two previous printers, an attempt was made to find this memory and try to reset it. Since there were two devices available - one new just out of the box, and the second already locked with a blue cartridge, the task was greatly simplified.
By analogy with Samsung printers, from a new printer in blocked a formatter board was installed. After turning it on, the situation did not change. The Xerox 6000 was still blocked by the blue cartridge. Then they swapped places MCU boards- these are boards blue located on top of the printer. When the printer was turned on again, it showed 100% of the toner in the cartridges. Having localized the board where the counters are stored, all that remains is to find the non-volatile memory. Careful inspection and further testing revealed that data is stored on the chip 24s16, on MCU board the microcircuit is designated “ 416m“.
Thus, in order to restore the printer’s functionality without replacing the chip, you just need to flash the 24c16 chip each time. For convenience, instead of the 24c16 chip in the SO8 package, you can solder a bed for the 24c16 chip in the DIP8 package - this will allow you to flash the chip without soldering the chip, which will not only reduce the firmware time by several times, but will also protect the board traces from damage that is inevitable when constantly resoldering the chip.

Considering that the resource of starter cartridges is limited to 500 copies (then you need to flash the chip again), this operation does not make sense from a commercial point of view. But if the printer is located, for example, somewhere in the Russian outback, where a populated area is several tens of kilometers away, then updating the printer’s firmware is a real way out of the situation.

Based on the Xerox Phaser 6000 / 6010 printer, developed multifunctional device Xerox workcentre 6015. An attempt to upload firmware from a Xerox 6000 printer into the firmware from a Xerox 6015 multifunction printer resulted in error 092-661.
