File download manager. Download using the Download Master download manager. Windows Standard Tools

Probably everyone knows such a thing as a “download manager”. As it turns out, not everyone understands what it really is, mistakenly believing that it is just a means of downloading files. This is partly true, as it is, but its capabilities are much wider than it might seem at first glance.

What is a download manager and what is it for?

In principle, starting from the concept itself, we can say that in most cases such applications are indeed a means for downloading the necessary content to HDD laptop, mobile device or desktop computer terminal.

The operating principles of different managers differ quite strongly, although for a certain classification group they are the same (the difference may only be in some settings and supported services). Let's look at the most common types.

Types of download managers

All programs called “download managers” can be divided into four main classes: standard tools of the OS itself (integrated into Internet browsers), third-party download managers, torrent downloaders and operating system download managers (for installation, recovery, etc. .). During installation, almost all file programs are built into Internet browsers (nowadays mobile devices are not taken into account).

Windows Standard Tools

Maybe not every user paid attention, but the same Windows OS has its own file download manager built into the standard browser Internet Explorer. When you install any other web browser, this downloader is automatically integrated into the program. Please note that for the most part, these are not browser managers’ own (although there are some), but rather the capabilities of the system itself.

The most simple example You can name a situation when a user is going to download a file, and the download starts either with a proposal to save it in such and such a place under such and such a name, or the information is downloaded to the location specified in the default settings.

Sometimes, in order to bypass automatic downloading to a given location, on the “Download” button, Download or on the download link, you just need to right-click and select the command “Save as ...”, “Save object as ...”, “Save by link ...”, “Save image...” or so on.

IN in this case it all depends on the types of data that will be saved in the location specified by the user (be it a computer hard drive (hard drive) or some other removable media). However, according to many, the manager Windows downloads does not have the capabilities that a modern user needs.

Simple download managers and how they work

Among the most common third-party applications is a download-type download manager. These include Download Master, ReGet, Free Download Manager, Orbit Downloader, etc.

The list goes on and on. What’s most interesting is that almost all programs of this type are absolutely free. True, ReGet Deluxe is not one of them, although you can also find a free version with a minimal set of functions.

The operating principle of all these applications is based on the fact that after starting downloading from the specified source (site), the program selects so-called “mirrors” (other sites that may contain this file). In this case, the download is carried out in parts from all currently available servers. As a rule, the functioning of programs of this type is based on the protocols HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, FTPS, etc.

Naturally, among such applications you can also find specialized utilities designed, say, for downloading multimedia, e-books, downloaders for working in file-sharing networks, etc. Many of them combine additional functions for working with torrent trackers.

Torrent trackers

Today, torrent trackers and tools for working with them are among the most popular because they have the highest speed, although they are considered illegal due to the content of “pirated” content. Among the most famous are, for example, the uTorrent download manager or the BitTorrent program, which is the ancestor of all applications of this type.

The principle of operation here is somewhat reminiscent standard managers, however, is based on the basics of accessing information and downloading content through peer-to-peer networks (peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol). In this case, when downloading files, applications access computer terminals that already contain the required files, either entirely or partially downloaded. This is what allows you to achieve maximum download speed.

Roughly speaking, the more “distributors” (computers that already have source files) on the Internet, the higher the download speed for other users. Sometimes this principle is called “you - to me, I - to you.” In other words, at the time of downloading, the user not only downloads information, but also gives it away.

Operating system loaders

Now about the most important thing. Let's figure out what a system boot manager is. Many people have probably noticed that there is nothing like this in the standard installation distribution, say Windows XP. But thanks to the efforts of computer enthusiasts, a disc called ZverDVD appeared.

In “The Beast”, on the disk itself there is a special Acronis utility, which starts even before the “OS” itself starts (provided, of course, that the optical drive is installed as the first boot device in the BIOS). From such a disk you can install the system from scratch, install the same Office, archivers, file managers and a huge number of additional utilities.

There is another type of bootloader (for example, Boot Manager). They involve installing several OSes on a computer, and at startup they ask you which OS needs to be loaded in this case. So, in parallel, on a “computer”, say, Windows and Linux can easily coexist. As they say, no problem.

The Download Master program is a currently popular download manager that supports most Windows operating systems and is distributed completely free of charge. Download Master allows you to download any files via HTTP, HTTPS and FTP protocols with a significant increase in download speed due to the fact that when downloading a file, it is divided into parts (streams), which are downloaded simultaneously. In addition, the program allows you to continue downloading a file from the current position after pausing or losing the connection. Thanks to its integration feature, Download Master is built as an add-on into your browser, allowing you to start downloading one or all files on a web page with just one click. For user convenience, downloaded files are recognized and placed in directories according to categories: Video, Audio, Images, etc.

The user also has access to the TopDownloads file directory, the tools of which allow you to search necessary files and “mirror” links to them, get information about the most frequently downloaded files and create your own online download catalog.

The built-in FTP Explorer tool is designed to navigate FTP servers, search and download files using the FTP protocol. The site manager allows you to set settings for a specific website, for example, specify a login and password, define a unique folder for saving downloaded files downloaded from this site, etc.

After launching the Download Master program and selecting the speed of your Internet connection, you will see the main program window (Fig. 3.1).

If the program window does not appear, it means that it is running in a minimized state. To call the main Download Master window, double-click on the program icon in the notification area of the taskbar:

Most of the main program window is occupied by a table; the columns will be filled with data as downloads are added and completed. At the top of the window, below the menu bar, there is a command bar, which by default contains the most frequently used commands in the form of buttons. You can customize the contents of this panel by selecting the commands you use most often. To make the settings, right-click on an area of the command bar that is free of buttons and select Button customization. In the dialog box of the same name that opens, you should select the required commands by checking or clearing the corresponding checkboxes.

To the right of the command bar there is a small window in the form of graphical and numerical indicators, demonstrating the loading speed. On the left side of the Download Master program window there is a list of categories. By clicking on the name of a category, you can view its contents, for example, all downloads, only downloaded, only programs, deleted, etc. Category Top downloads opens the contents of the web page with the most popular downloads, and the category Story involves viewing information about your previously downloaded files for today, yesterday, a week, a month or even a year.

Before you start downloading files using the Download Master download manager, you should optimize its settings, for example, select the download speed if you have not done so before, and define integration parameters. I will consider only the most important and useful settings. You can get detailed information about other parameters from the application help system.

1. Select a menu command Tools | Settings. A dialog box will open Program settings(Fig. 3.2).

In chapter Are common basic program settings are made. Checkbox Run when Windows starts it’s better to reset, because Download Master can be easily launched from a browser window if necessary, but the constant process of an idle application in random access memory to nothing. And here are the checkboxes Show tray icon And Animation of tray icon during download- necessary settings. When activated, an application icon appears in the notification area on the taskbar when you launch the Download Master program. During the download process, this icon takes the form of an arrow moving from top to bottom, indicating that a file(s) is being downloaded. What is noteworthy is that depending on the download speed, the arrow moves faster or slower, and if the download stops, the icon also becomes static standard icon. You can immediately determine what speed is selected and whether the download is ongoing. Check box Show floating window allows you to display a small window with download and program controls (Fig. 3.3).

Controls in the floating window allow you to perform basic operations with downloads without opening the main window of the Download Master program: select the speed, pause and restart the download, access the program’s context menu, etc. In addition, the floating window displays the speed of downloading objects from the Internet. The floating window settings are made by the item elements Window settings context menu, called up by right-clicking on the window.

2. Go to the section Integration. Dialog Box Contents Program settings will change (Fig. 3.4).

In chapter Integration you can change the settings for integrating the program into your browser. By default, Download Master is built into Internet program Explorer in such a way that it intercepts all the files that you are about to download. In this case, when you click on the link, a dialog box automatically appears Add download with a proposal to create a new download and upload the file using Download Master. If you need to download the file using the browser, you should click on the link with the mouse while holding down the key . To comply with this condition, the checkboxes and Use Alt and Ctrl keys when clicking on links in the browser Should be installed. Here you can also enable integration into another browser that is installed on your computer: Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, Netscape, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, etc. The corresponding checkboxes are provided for this. Check box Track URL on clipboard Allows the program to automatically add a link to a file from the clipboard to the download. In my case the checkbox is checked.

3. Section Compound also contains important controls: here you can select the type of your Internet connection, and also determine the speed of downloading files manually when choosing one of the speed modes (Fig. 3.5).

In the dropdown list Connection type/speed you should indicate the type of your network connection: for example, if the speed of your Internet connection is 1024 KB/s, then you need to select the value T1/LAN. In the control group Speed You can manually determine the speed value for each mode except maximum and automatic. For example, with a maximum value of 1024 KB/s, the speed for medium and low speed modes can be set to 512 and 128 KB/s, respectively. Thus, when downloading a file, you can use the maximum speed mode if the connection is not in use, and medium or low - if, for example, you are currently loading web pages in a browser. Automatic speed mode functions only in Windows XP and allows the program to automatically reduce download speed when the user activates the network.

Chapter Dialer contains dialing tools that are relevant if you are using a modem (Dial-up) connection.

In chapter HTTP/FTP settings The drop down list may be useful Impersonate (User-Agent field), the value selected in it is accepted by the servers when recognizing the Download Master program. Simply put, if the website does not support downloading files using download managers, but only through the browser, in this list you can select a value, for example, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Download Master will be identified as this browser.

4. Section Downloads allows you to determine the properties of downloads. Here you can select the default directory for uploaded files (drop-down list Current folder for saving files and button Change). In the dropdown list Type of folder recognition for saving an algorithm is selected for selecting the directory into which the downloaded file will be saved. Paragraph Recognize by category involves placing downloaded files in different folders in accordance with their extensions. For example, the downloaded video file will be placed in the Video folder, and graphic image- to the Images folder. The program can also create subfolders based on the current date, file path or server name. You can also allow the program to use the last selected folder or block the recognition function. The next two drop-down lists ( Maximum amount simultaneous downloads And Maximum number of sections per download) can be very useful when downloading from some servers that use restrictions (Figure 3.6). For example, if the FTP server allows you to upload only one file at a time and only to one stream, then in these drop-down lists you should specify values equal to one.

NOTE.

I note that the settings made in this section apply to all servers from which downloads are made. To determine the settings for downloading from a specific server, use the section Download manager.

Chapter Miscellaneous By checking and unchecking the checkboxes, you can define a wide variety of download parameters. Pay attention to the checkboxes Receive file size when adding an download, Receive content ZIP archive when downloading starts, Display a window for viewing the contents of the ZIP archive, Automatically delete completed downloads and Use "History" when checking whether a file has been downloaded before.

5. In section Proxy settings you can specify the addresses, ports and, if necessary, login and password of various proxy servers, both http and ftp, and socks. In most cases, checking the checkbox is sufficient. Use proxy settings from MS Internet Explorer. In this case, Download Master uses the same proxy settings as the Internet Explorer browser.

6. Section Automation can be useful in cases where you need to download a file or a group of files of an impressive size, the download of which will take more than one day. Check box Start all downloads will allow the program to automatically start an incomplete download when the user starts the program. In Group Shutdowns you can determine the behavior of the program after all downloads are completed: disconnect from the Internet or turn off the computer. The last option is useful if, for example, you leave the computer overnight to complete the download. Checked checkbox Check availability new version XX days will allow you to receive information about program updates (and it is updated quite often) after a specified number of days in the range from one to thirty.

Chapter Antivirus serves to activate the scan mode for downloaded files for viruses. In the dropdown list Antivirus program you should select an antivirus scanner. If the list is empty, after pressing the button Find you can choose the executable file yourself antivirus program. In the input field Options if necessary, additional conditions for the antivirus application are set, and by checking the checkbox Scan files only with the following extensions you will prohibit scanning of all files, limiting them to file types whose extensions are listed below.

7. Tool and section of the same name Site Manager are used to define parameters for downloading files from a specific server. After pressing the button Add you will see a dialog box Adding a site(Fig. 3.7).

In this dialog box, after specifying the server address in the input field Website, you can define different personal settings downloads from a specified resource: specify a user login and password (may be required for some FTP and HTTP sites), assign or disable the use of a proxy, determine the category and directory for saving files and, most importantly, limit the number of sections for each download and the number of simultaneous downloads. For example, for resources http://multiki.arjlover.net , http://filmiki.arjlover.net , http://film.arjlover.net And http://audio.arjlover.net follows in both dropdown lists - Number of sections for downloading And Number of downloads- set the values to 1.

The rest of the program settings are made according to your preferences and are not as necessary and useful as those described above.

So, I'll try to download a file using the Download Master program. Since we are honest citizens and the purpose of this guide is to teach you to download only legal files (smile), I will download the distribution of the Download Master program, which is distributed completely free of charge.

If the Download Master tools are integrated into the browser (checked Integration into Microsoft Internet Explorer (ver. 4.x-6.x or higher) in the program settings), then to download the file using the download manager, just click on the link. In this case, if you need to download the file using a browser, you should click on the link with the mouse while holding down the key .

If integration of the download manager into the browser is disabled, then downloading the file using Download Master can be done in three ways:

Press and hold the key , click on the link;

In all three cases a dialog box will open Add download(Fig. 3.8).

In the dropdown list Category dialog box Add download you can specify the category of the uploaded file if you use category recognition. List Save to contains paths to the last directories used when downloading files. You can select any of the previously used directories, manually enter the folder path, or select the download directory in the dialog box that opens after clicking the button Change. Once the directory is assigned, you can use it as the default for all future downloads by clicking the button:

You can access additional download options that are hidden by default. To do this, click on the link Additionally located in the lower right corner of the dialog box Add download(Fig. 3.9).

The dialog box will increase in size and you will see additional download properties controls located on three tabs. On the tab Are common you can specify a specific file name with which the downloaded object should be saved, specify the user login and password (may be required on some, mainly FTP, servers), and limit the number of download sections (streams). By checking the appropriate boxes, you can also force the program to get the file size when adding a given download to the list and display the contents of the archive if a file with a zip extension is downloaded. In the Link input field, the referrer value (link to the page from which the direct link to the file was obtained) is specified, which is set automatically. For some sites, this field must be set to a certain value, otherwise the download will not start. Drop-down list A priority serves to determine the priority of a given download: high, medium or low. Useful if you are downloading a lot of files and some should be downloaded first and others last.

Tab Mirrors is intended to indicate mirrors, i.e. links to the same file, only located at a different address. Relevant if the link to a partially downloaded file is invalid. In order not to download the file again, you can specify a new link on this tab and continue downloading from where you stopped, in other words, you can pump up file.

NOTE.

Not all websites support resuming files. Files from servers that limit this feature will have to be downloaded again. As a rule, Download Master informs you about the possibility of resuming the file.

If the file download has stopped due to a connection failure, the object being deleted from the server, or other reasons, the first thing you need to do is get a new link to the file. If this is a file-sharing hosting, then use the techniques described in the next chapter and allow you to get a direct link to the file. In other cases, use search tools to find other locations of an identical file.

NOTE.

To add a mirror to the properties of a previously partially downloaded download, right-click on the download name in the list (in the main program window) and select Properties from the context menu. A dialog box will open Download properties, identical to the window Add download.

In the dialog box that opens Adding a mirror the new link will automatically appear in the input field Mirror URL(Fig. 3.10).

If not, insert it yourself. To confirm adding a mirror, click on the button OK.

In the list on the tab Mirrors you will see two links: the previously used one is highlighted in bold, and the new one is located below and has a serial number (in my case, 1) (Fig. 3.11). To use the added link as the main one, click on the button As main. In this case, the program will first try to download the file from the main link, and then from the additional one(s).

Once the mirrors are added, you can continue downloading. The program will automatically switch between links and use the one where the file is available.

If the mirrors are unknown to you, you can use their search by clicking the button:

in the dialog box Download properties or by right-clicking on the download name in the list (in the main program window) and selecting Find mirrors from the context menu. In the main program window, in the section Top downloads(left), a web page with search results will be loaded using the built-in browser (Fig. 3.12).

The easiest way is to click on the button Add mirrors, located under the list of mirrors. Links to the file located on the open web page will be added as mirrors. Click on a link Description of the mirror, located to the right of each mirror, will open a web page with detailed statistics for that mirror link.

If the search for mirrors using the program did not produce results, you should use the services of search mirrors by submitting a request in the form of the name of the downloaded file with the extension “dmaster.exe”. By the way, please note that in the case of the request “dmaster.exe” you will receive links to different versions of the Download Master program, since the file name is not unique, i.e. does not change depending on the version. Therefore, for a correct and successful search, you should use a query that includes the program version, for example, “Download Master 5.5.13.1173” or “dmaster.exe Download Master 5.5.13.1173”.

It's time to start downloading the file directly. After starting the download, you will see its dialog box with a file download indicator (Fig. 3.13).

This dialog box informs the user about the download process: file link, full and downloaded volume, download speed, time spent and remaining time. The horizontal rectangle represents the file being downloaded: until it is downloaded, the rectangle is empty. As the file loads, the rectangle will begin to fill with green fragments. By the way, in the figure, the green fragments are located in five positions of the rectangle, which means that the file is downloaded in five sections (streams), i.e., five different fragments of the file are downloaded simultaneously. Thus, downloading data from the Internet is somewhat faster compared to regular downloading, for example, using a browser.

On the right side of the dialog box with the file download indicator there is an item Re-download, the value of which determines the possibility of reloading the file after stopping. Based on the value Supported(Fig. 3.13) you can understand that if the download is interrupted, it can be resumed later (as long as the file is available on at least one of the specified mirrors or the main link). If the value is specified Not supported after stopping and resuming the download, the file download will begin again.

All downloaded (as well as downloaded and planned) are reflected in the list of downloads. In Fig. Figure 3.14 shows downloads in several states.

Let's go through the list shown in the figure, from top to bottom. Symbol:

and files that are currently being downloaded are highlighted in light green. In addition to the file name and status Upload, displays the file download percentage, full size, remaining time and current speed. Pink color and symbol:

files awaiting download are highlighted. Once the previous file has finished downloading, it automatically moves to the next pending file and begins downloading. Successfully downloaded files are highlighted in blue with a symbol

Warning symbol:

files are highlighted whose loading was interrupted for some reason. Files whose downloading is forcibly suspended and will not begin without additional user action are accompanied by the symbol:

In Fig. 3.14 there are three such files, and they differ in download priority: downloads with normal priority are in regular font, blue bold for high, and italic for low. If you simultaneously start downloading many files with different priorities, then downloads with high priority will be downloaded first, then with normal and then with low priority. At the bottom of the main program window there is a status bar that reflects the number of downloads in various states: downloading, pending and paused, as well as the overall speed for all downloads.

While the Download Master program is running, you can change the download speed of files. This is done so that the user can more or less comfortably perform other tasks related to working on the Internet, for example, loading web pages or uploading files using the browser. By default, Download Master uses the maximum speed setting, which uses (if possible) all the bandwidth. You can also select medium or low speed. These values are set automatically the first time you launch the program and you specify the speed of your Internet connection. In addition, you can change the values of medium and low speeds yourself in the section Compound dialog box Program settings(menu command Tools | Settings). The average speed allows you to comfortably surf the Internet while downloading files. Low download speed is convenient to use in cases where you are satisfied with long download times or are actively working on the Internet. Automatic mode allows you to reduce the speed while the user is active on the Internet and resumes the maximum download speed when idle. The adjustable mode is used to reduce the speed during network activity of user-specified programs, for example Internet Explorer, in the Download Master settings. At the time of writing, setting both of the latter speed modes was not possible in the Windows 7 operating system.

Now I will look at a convenient function of the program when downloading archive files with a zip extension. You can activate the function of automatically viewing the contents of all downloaded zip archives in the program settings, and also forcefully display the contents of the selected zip file. In the latter case, right-click on the file name with the zip extension in the list of downloads, and then select View ZIP archive. A dialog box will open Archive contents with a link to the zip file in the header (Fig. 3.15).

By checking the boxes next to the names of the files that you want to download, you can select the files to download. This way you won't have to download the entire zip archive. In the future, the download occurs as usual, only the download symbol will be changed to:

and in the end you will receive a zip archive containing not all, but only selected files.

The command allows you to scan the contents of an open web page and select files to download from all available ones.

NOTE.

If the execution of the Upload command EVERYTHING with Download Master occurs on your computer to no avail, try running the browser with administrator rights. To do this, right-click on the shortcut or executable file of the program (for example, Internet Explorer) and select Run as administrator in the context menu. In addition, this command may not work correctly in 64-bit versions of the browser.

After choosing a team Download EVERYTHING using Download Master you will see a dialog box Captured from page(Fig. 3.16).

In the dialog box that opens, you will see all the files available for download from links on the web page on which the command was selected (including files with the extensions php, htm, html, etc.). By clicking on a column header you can sort files, for example, by extension. To download the file further, check the box next to its name. Known file types are marked automatically by the program. When working with a large number of files, you can use the right-click context menu commands for convenience. Team Uncheck everything clears the checkboxes of all files in the list, and the command Select all, on the contrary, establishes. Also useful are commands that allow you to select files based on their extension: Mark all with extension "" And Uncheck everything with the extension "". After clicking OK, the selected files will be placed in the download list of the main program window.

The command can be useful for automatically downloading files on another computer. It happens like this. For example, you leave your home computer turned on with the Download Master manager running and an active Internet connection. On another computer, for example at work, you transfer any files for remote download, and they are automatically downloaded on your home computer.

NOTE.

To take advantage of remote downloads, you must register for free at http://topdownloads.ru/register.php.

After choosing a team Transfer to remote DM upload A new browser window (tab) will automatically open with information about all remote downloads of the registered user (Fig. 3.17).

In this window you can manage remote downloads - delete, postpone and mark them again for download.

In addition to registering on the website http://topdownloads.ru/ You will need to configure a special plugin built into the download manager. To do this, in the main program window, select the menu command Tools | Plugins. In the dialog box that opens Program settings In chapter Plugins select plugin Remote Download plugin for TopDownloads.ru and click on the button Settings. A dialog box will open Remote Download Settings(Fig. 3.18).

In input fields Username And Password you must provide your registration details on the website TopDownloads.ru. By checking the box Check for links every XX minutes, you can set the checking interval for added remote downloads. The value must be selected from the drop-down list ranging from 10 minutes to 24 hours. Button press:

will force a check for the presence of remote downloads. Button Show log will open Text Document with data on the operation of the Remote Download plugin.

In addition to the http protocol, the Download Master program allows you to view the contents of FTP servers and download files from them. I’ll talk about how the download manager works with the ftp protocol a little later, but for now I’ll look at the entire process of downloading websites.

Download managers At its core, downloading a file from the Internet is copying from one computer to another, only the computer from which the file is copied is located quite far from the one that receives the file. By and large, such copying is nothing special

Download managers there are quite a few. Some of them are paid, and some are free (Download Master, FlashGet, Free DownloadManager). Each popular program their merits and their fans.

But all these programs have a lot in common: they allow you to download several files at the same time, they can download a file after a connection is lost, and when downloading they can split the file into parts in order to download into several parallel streams - in many cases this can significantly speed up the download.

Today we will look at download manager Free Download Manager, whose name translates as “free download manager”.

The name is not a deception: before us is the most honest free program(even moreover, the program is open source - take it and finish it if you can).

It is important to note that it was created without any banners, as well as hidden advertising and spyware. At the same time, you can’t call it an amateur thing - everything is thought out, debugged, and even the design is at a fairly high level.

By the way, here is a screenshot of the program itself:

In addition to being free, I was initially surprised by the ability of this program to listen to a downloaded audio file or watch a video without waiting for the download to finish.

And then, as always, you even download a movie for hours or days, and in the end it turns out that the quality of the picture and sound is such that your eyes wouldn’t even see it, your ears wouldn’t listen, and you feel sorry for the time spent!

Free Download Manager, without interrupting work, will be able to show the downloaded part of the file, even if only 100 - 200 kilobytes have been downloaded.

And in subsequent versions such discoveries began to appear, such as a tool for downloading files from file-sharing networks such as BitTorrent; saving flash, sending files...

Program interface

At the very beginning, we can change the program settings so that tracking is installed for our browser. To do this, go to the parameters - settings - tracking tab. I use Google browser Chrome. You check the box next to what you use:

Then the system will ask you to restart the browser, but we must listen to it, although this is not always easy!

Then, every time you download something, the file manager will make our life much easier. It looks something like this:

Then our downloads appear in the main window of the program. Let's figure out what's what:

The icon to the left of the file name indicates the download status. A yellow arrow pointing to the right indicates that the file download is about to begin, a green arrow indicates that it is already underway. A blue checkmark indicates that the download is complete (100% is written in the “Downloaded” column).

You can click on the lines of completed downloads with the mouse and delete them from the list (using the Del key). However, you can delete even unfinished pumping. In this case, the downloaded file or part of it is saved on the disk.

The Shift-Del combination deletes the download along with the downloaded fragment or even the entire file. Maybe some kind of error occurred or viewing a fragment showed that the file is no good - so you don’t have to look for it on the disk just to erase it.

Likewise, you won’t have to search for the downloaded file to run it. Double click on a line in the table or the “Run file” command in it context menu- and the file will run.

Conclusion

It is important to use the program in automatic mode. That is, we set the settings for the browser, we go to download something, the download manager offers us to download it, we click ok and download.

But if we want to manually enter the file address, we may encounter a bad problem. The file can be downloaded as an html page, in an unexpected size (in my case, it was 20 - 200 kilobytes).

So use download manager - Free Download Manager automatically and everything will be ok!

Built-in Windows features do not provide for the possibility of resuming files - as a result, if the connection is lost, the information has to be downloaded again, spending extra time and nerves on this and paying for extra traffic. And even with a normal connection, this download option cannot be called fast, because the download is carried out in one stream. Another thing is special download managers (download managers), which can resume downloading from the point where it was interrupted, and split downloaded files into sections that are downloaded simultaneously, which allows you to achieve a significant increase in download speed.

There are many download managers on the market today with similar functionality - figuring out which solution will be the best in a particular situation is not easy. Therefore, in this article we will conduct comparative assessment several popular download managers offered by different developers.

Let’s immediately clarify that all of them, of course, support multi-threaded downloading and resuming files after a connection is lost and automatically select the optimal (depending on the type of connection) download speed. They also integrate into popular browsers, replacing the standard download module, and monitor the clipboard, independently identifying links. This means that, in general, any of the solutions mentioned above ensures fast and reliable downloading of files from FTP and HTTP servers.

Download managers differ from each other in various nuances (see table). In particular, not all of them provide partial downloading of ZIP archives, correctly recognize links from file storage sites such as Rapidshare in free mode, and allow direct downloading (that is, simply adding a URL like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= ...) download clips from online video services3 (YouTube, Google Video, etc.). Not all download managers are able to download from secure FTP and web servers (that is, using the SFTP and HTTPS protocols, respectively) and allow you to estimate the file size before downloading it. And support for BitTorrent and eDonkey clients is generally implemented only in some download managers, which, however, in our opinion, is no longer so relevant, since the functionality of such clients is limited. Different solutions have different lists of supported Internet browsers, and the principle of such integration itself is different: in some cases it’s enough just to enable the corresponding checkboxes in the settings, but in others you will need to first download and install the plug-in corresponding to the browser. In addition, there are more subtle differences regarding the download process itself - for example, in some solutions, when browser activity is detected, the traffic priority automatically changes (and in some cases this will have to be done manually), in others you can assign priorities to downloads (which is the case with some products not provided) etc.

GetRight/GetRight Pro 6.3e

Developer: Headlight Software

Distribution size: GetRight - 4.78 MB; GetRight Pro - 4.91 MB

Work under control: Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista

Distribution method: shareware (30-day demo: GetRight - http://download.getright.com/getright-download.exe ; GetRight Pro - http://download.getright.com/getright_pro_setup.exe)

Price: GetRight - $19.95; GetRight Pro - $49.95

GetRight is a download manager that has been present on the market for a long time and has gained popularity due to its convenience and reliable operation, but today it is far from being so attractive to wide range users, since in a number of parameters it is inferior to analogues and is offered at a very high price. And, in fact, further development of this solution is no longer underway. This download manager allows you to download files (including on a schedule) via HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and FTPS protocols and can be used to download files from file-sharing servers, receive new music videos in a Podcast/RSS channel and download files via the BitTorrent protocol ( it is possible to simultaneously receive part of the data via FTP/HTTP, and part from BitTorrent with subsequent “gluing” on the fly). It is possible to automatically add received multimedia files to playlists in the MediaPlayer and iTunes applications. However, the utility will not help when downloading videos from video hosting sites and partially downloading archives.

GetRight automatically integrates into leading browsers, and you can specify a list of browsers of interest when installing the utility. A special built-in browser provides viewing of the folder structure of FTP servers and HTTP sites. Traffic is limited manually by setting the maximum allowable download speed limit, and you can enable a checkbox to remove this limitation when the screensaver is active. Before downloading, you can check the address of interest for existence and check the file size. The number of simultaneously downloaded files and the number of streams are regulated, and the best “mirrors” for downloading are easy to find automatically or specify manually. Depending on the types, downloaded files can be distributed into different folders, and priorities can be set for folders. Upon completion of the download, it is possible to automatically assess the integrity of the received files and scan them for viruses.

The program is presented in two versions - basic GetRight and extended GetRight Pro. The Pro version provides the ability to work in the “client-server” mode (for downloading files by one computer on the network, to which links are simply transferred from the others) and as a proxy server (allows other Internet utilities to use GetRight’s capabilities for downloading files). It also has built-in functionality for synchronizing already downloaded files in the event of their updates appearing on the servers and uploading files to the servers, there is a scripting language (provides advanced download management capabilities), you can limit the download speed separate files and etc.

The utility can independently determine the types of downloaded files and distribute them into categories (programs, music, videos, etc.), and when the speed decreases, it automatically restarts the download, which avoids downtime. Downloading is carried out in several threads. If necessary, for certain sites, it is easy to limit the number of streams and configure the program so that files downloaded from them are saved in certain folders and/or categories. Once the download is complete, you may disconnect from the Internet, go into sleep mode, turn off the computer, etc. It is possible to control the download speed and automatically reduce it if the user is surfing the Internet. Orbit Downloader 2.8.13

Developer: OrbitDownloader

Distribution size: 2.17 MB

Work under control: Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista

Distribution method: freeware (http://www.orbitdownloader.com/download.htm)

Price: for free

Orbit Downloader is very easy to use, but quite functional and convenient download manager, featuring advanced support for social services. It allows you to download not only files via FTP and HTTP protocols, but also various kinds of streaming flash, video and audio content via RTSP/MMS/RTMP protocols from MySpace, YouTube, Imeem, Pandora and other similar services. It is possible to download files from file-sharing services (including Rapidshare, MegaUpload, 4shared, Depositfiles, etc.), as well as downloading using Metalink technology, which allows you to download individual segments from networks with almost any protocol. Downloading media content from social services is implemented in this utility through the built-in Grab++ module, which only works under Internet Explorer. Moreover, the download technology is fundamentally different from that adopted in other download managers: if it is usually customary for a download manager to simply indicate a link like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=.., then the Grab++ module determines a direct link when you hover the mouse pointer over the desired video in its viewing window.

The program integrates into popular browsers, and support required browsers is configured during its installation. Traffic limitation is done manually through the settings. Several files can be downloaded at the same time - each in several threads, the number of threads is adjustable, you can also change the number of threads for a single download. It is impossible to check the file size before downloading, as well as partially downloading a ZIP archive, but you are allowed to view the contents of a ZIP file before downloading it. An increase in download speed is achieved not only through multi-threading, but also through the use of Orbitnet technology, based on P2P and auto-search for “mirrors”. It’s easy to redistribute already downloaded files into different folders. Once the download is complete, the utility can check the file for viruses with the built-in antivirus, automatically disconnect the Internet connection and turn off the computer.

FlashGet 1.9.6

Developer: Trend Media Corporation Ltd

Distribution size: 4.43 MB

Work under control: Windows (all versions)

Distribution method: freeware (http://www.flashget.com/en/download.htm?uid=undefined)

Price: for free

FlashGet is probably the most popular file download manager in the world with the longest history of development. Today, this utility is still worthy of attention due to its convenience, ease of use and high speed download, however, its functionality will not suit all users, since for the most part it is limited to only basic capabilities. FlashGet allows you to download files via HTTP/FTP/MMS/RTSP protocols and quite correctly recognizes links from Rapidshare. However, in general, there may be problems when working with file hosting services, and downloading videos from video hosting sites is generally impossible, as well as partial downloading of ZIP archives. However, in latest version The utility now has the ability to download using the BitTorrent and eMule protocols, which is not provided in every download manager.

FlashGet can integrate into popular browsers, support for some of which requires the installation of plugins. Built-in FTP and HTTP browsers make it easy to find the files you need. The optimal connection speed is indicated in the settings by setting the connection type; it is possible to set traffic restrictions manually by selecting one of three preset modes. Downloaded files can be distributed into different folders based on user-specified categories. Provided automatic search“mirrors” and downloading from the fastest and most accessible servers. It is easy to configure the download to take place at a strictly designated time, and upon completion, the utility can scan files for viruses and terminate the connection.

ReGet Junior 2.2

Developer: ReGet Software

Distribution size: 1.66 MB

Work under control: Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP

Distribution method: shareware (30-day demo - http://download.reget.com/regetjr.exe)

Price: 250 rub.

ReGet Junior is the easiest to use download manager, aimed at beginner users. The utility has minimal functionality, and its attractiveness lies only in the fact that you don’t need to deal with the settings in principle. It allows you to download files from FTP and HTTP servers and integrates into the most popular browsers. Downloading is carried out in several threads, and several files can be downloaded simultaneously; The number of streams and simultaneously downloaded files is not regulated.

Conclusion

So, the functionality of download managers from different developers very similar - they all provide reliable and fast downloading of files from the Internet. Therefore, many home users working in the most popular operating systems Windows browsers, it is quite enough to acquire one free tool, for example Download Master, Free Download Manager, ReGet Deluxe (Personal edition) or Orbit Downloader. Theoretically, all of them can download various types of information, including files from servers like Rapidshare.com and, with the exception of ReGet Deluxe, streaming flash, video and audio content from YouTube and other social services. However, the ability to capture video and flash is most fully implemented in Orbit Downloader, which is worth paying attention to for fans of downloading this kind of content. As for FlashGet, betting on it, in our opinion, does not make much sense due to its inferior functionality to the above-mentioned programs.

Choice Google users Chrome and Apple Safari are more modest - they will have to use Download Master, Free Download Manager or Orbit Downloader, since the other download managers considered do not support the corresponding browsers. However, you need to keep in mind that you won’t be able to use Orbit Downloader to download media content from social services, since it only works under Internet Explorer.

Download managers are one of the most popular categories of software for home users, along with browsers and file manager. Programs, demo versions of games, patches, huge amounts of information in file storages ah - it’s hard to imagine how we would download them from the Internet without the help of these useful utilities. Especially when their impressive functionality is offered completely for free.

New directions for the development of download managers

At first glance, adding something new to the usual arsenal of download managers functions is quite problematic - over a long period of their development, they have already acquired everything they need, and over the past couple of years there has been a kind of stagnation in the market for this software. It is not surprising that the development of many veterans like Go!Zilla or GetRight has practically ceased.

But progress does not stand still, and over the past time many new tasks have appeared for download managers - online video services from which you cannot download your favorite clip directly, or file hosting services that deliberately leave support for download managers only for VIP clients. Fortunately, most developers of such software quickly circumvented the limitations of such services to the delight of an appreciative audience. Some craftsmen have moved even further, adding BitTorrent and eDonkey clients to their creations. On the one hand, it’s a great idea - because now, instead of several programs, we will have to use only one, but if we consider this question more globally and take into account not only the fact of availability, but also functionality, it becomes clear that there is little sense in this.

Download Master 5.5.3.1131

Developer WestByte

Size 4.9 MB

Verdict

Excellent functionality; support for video hosting and file storage

Extremely inconvenient default interface settings

The Ukrainian program successfully breaks two ossified stereotypes - that free software must necessarily be worse than commercial software and that download managers are only suitable for downloading files from HTTP/FTP. Download Master is more than just a “download manager”; we have a universal agent for downloading data from the Internet for all occasions. Now you don’t have to struggle with various software for saving clips from YouTube and other video services - just add a URL like youtube.com/watch?v=, and the program itself will generate a direct link, download the file, and if you wish, immediately play it in the built-in FLV -player. The FTP client, flexible adjustment of Internet connection speed, a powerful scheduler that has finally caught up with the functionality of its brother from ReGet, and many other bonuses also deserve warm words. True, limiting the speed for each download, as ReGet can do, is still only a dream, but given the enthusiasm of the developers who regularly delight us with program updates, we are very likely to see this feature in the next versions of DM.

But what is especially pleasing is the excellent interaction of the utility with numerous file hosting sites, where 90% of all information in the HTTP sector of the Internet is stored. It's no secret that the majority of file storages in free mode do not support download managers, forcing us to download files exclusively through the browser. In most cases, DM manages to “capture” generated URLs, even from the famous Rapidshare, and if you have a premium account, the utility integrates completely seamlessly with similar services.

However, Download Master still has some drawbacks - extremely inconvenient default interface settings. The program literally inundates us with banners, pop-up windows and other tinsel, and all this just gets in the way. Fortunately, after spending just a couple of minutes “tuning” the utility, the user gets at his disposal a surprisingly comfortable and intuitive product, which is deservedly awarded the "Editor's Choice".

FlashGet 1.96

Verdict

A universal “combine” of download manager, BitTorrent and eMule client

Lack of significant updates for several years

An honored veteran among download managers: FlashGet is still held in high esteem by many users, although it pleases us less and less with truly global updates. Starting with version 1.72, the creators of FlashGet completely let the program float freely, transferring it to freeware status to the delight of fans and adding support for the eMule and BitTorrent protocols. The last step of the developers is quite difficult to understand - all the same, the functionality of such a “combine” in comparison with the same µTorrent and eMule Plus leaves much to be desired, and inflating the program solely for the sake of a “tick” is simply frivolous. Moreover, the functionality of the manager itself still remains at the level of 2004 - FlashGet does not even have the option to get the file size before downloading, not to mention partial downloading of Zip archives or support for video services. Of course, FlashGet has the basic functions of software of this class in place, such as: multi-threaded downloading, flexible adjustment bandwidth connections, a simple scheduler. But this is clearly not enough for the program to claim the title of best in its category, and FlashGet’s work with many popular file hosting services is also far from ideal. In total, we have before us a good complex of a download manager and a p2p client, which is quite suitable for an undemanding user, but there are also best utilities in this category.

Verdict

Impressive functionality; user-friendly interface

The scheduler needs improvement

Incredible, but true - under such a nondescript name hides an extremely powerful and functional utility, which in many ways has surpassed even the vaunted Download Master. The user has support for popular file storages, a built-in torrent client and HTML spider, a special Upload manager for instantly uploading files to WikiFortio hosting (up to 100 MB) - what more could you want? The almost perfect work of FDM with numerous video services deserves a special compliment - just add the URL of the page with the clip, the utility will do the rest itself. If the FLV format (in which videos on YouTube and similar services are encoded) is not to your liking, then FDM will allow you to convert it to a more accessible AVI or WMV using the built-in video transcoder. The developers have also done a great job on the interface - intuitive, simple and not overloaded with unnecessary windows, it is in no way inferior to its “tuned” brother from DM. The picture is completed by a built-in search engine for “mirrors”, partial downloading of Zip archives, convenient management of downloaded files, and even a portable version for enthusiasts who are accustomed to carrying everything with them on a flash drive. Perhaps the only (and even then insignificant) minus of the utility is that it is not the best scheduler, seriously inferior to its counterparts from DM and ReGet, but it was precisely this nuance that did not allow it to claim the laurels of a leader. In all other respects, it is a great alternative to Download Master!

Verdict

The best existing utility for working with file storage and video services

An FTP client would be nice; weak scheduler

Despite the unassuming appearance, this is one of the most powerful download managers. The developers themselves call their brainchild a social media downloader, as if emphasizing its compliance with the spirit of Web 2.0 and numerous WWW services launched under its auspices - MySpace, YouTube, Google Video, etc. Orbit Downloader is doing no worse with the traditional segment of the Network - an advanced search algorithm for “mirrors” based on p2p technologies, excellent work with Rapidshare and almost fifty other similar hosting sites, support for streaming video and audio (MMS and RTSP protocols), integration with popular browsers, etc. The creators are especially proud of the minimal system requirements programs - only 3 MB of consumed RAM and 3% processor load during downloading - an outstanding indicator. As for the shortcomings, Orbit Downloader has practically none, not counting the simple interface already mentioned above, which is in many ways reminiscent of the classic FlashGet, although this is more of a plus than a minus. And of course, after the ideal DM and FDM, I would also like to see a powerful scheduler, an FTP client and a number of additional functions for working with video - since competitors have them, why don’t they appear in Orbit? Total - well-deserved 4 points and an excellent choice for low-power PCs, where every megabyte of memory and megahertz of processor counts.

Verdict

Powerful and convenient download manager

Cannot download videos from YouTube and similar services

The biggest surprise in the camp of download managers in 2007 was the official transition of one of the most famous programs in this category to freeware status for home use. And although there are not so many innovations in version 5.2 (the interface has been slightly improved, the most annoying errors that led to the “crash” of the program have been fixed), this is quite enough for the victorious return of the former king of the market. ReGet still does an excellent job of downloading files even from the most problematic web hosting sites, supports all known protocols (HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS/RTSP) and provides almost unlimited possibilities for customizing the parameters of each download. The highlight of the program is rightfully considered to be a powerful scheduler, which is not inferior in functionality to individual commercial utilities, and the FTP client and FTP search engine distinguish ReGet from other competitors. Of course, ReGet Deluxe is still far from ideal - in particular, individual elements The interface (for example, switching on the fly between the number of sections and individual download settings) needs further polishing, and support for the newfangled downloading of flash videos from YouTube and other video hosting sites would not be superfluous. On the other hand, ReGet Deluxe 5.2 works perfectly with Rapidshare, uses system resources sparingly, and in terms of overall functionality it still holds a leading position among other download managers. A smart choice for the pragmatic user.

Other free download managers

One of the first free utilities in its category, today Fresh Download no longer surprises with either functionality or interface. There is no support for file storage or YouTube, and the rather stupid system of opening each task in a new window does not contribute to the comfort of work. However, if you're not interested in Web 2.0 trends, Fresh Download may be worth a look.

Download Accelerator Manager 3.1

Another candidate for the title of full-time download manager, but with a traditionally weak scheduler. Besides, in free version The utility has a number of unpleasant limitations that do not have the best effect on the ease of working with it. Fortunately, there were no problems with video services, and this partially rehabilitates the program. DAM requires .NET Framework 1.1 to function.
