Cartridges for Samsung ML. SAMSUNG ML printers Samsung ML laser printer

I am sure that a laser printer installed in the office no longer surprises anyone. This phenomenon is quite common and is justified by the combination of the technical characteristics of these devices with the needs of modern offices. Another thing is a home printer. Today, most home PC owners prefer inkjet technologies. This is mainly due to the fairly low cost of inkjet printers with their quite acceptable technical characteristics. Add to this the possibility of color printing, and you will get an almost ideal printer “for home and family.” Why almost? Yes because... No! Still, the topic of today's review is not inkjet printers, and therefore I will not discuss them now, but will return to them in some future material.

So, we can safely say that technology laser printing confidently began their journey towards our home. An example is the culprit of this review - the Samsung ML-1210 laser printer. Judge for yourself: not all of us need color printing. In addition, not everyone is satisfied with the water resistance of hard copies of documents received at inkjet printers. Cartridge life, print speed, copy price, buffer size - all this makes us turn our attention towards laser printers, but the price of these devices is quite high, which scares off a potential buyer. The above-mentioned Samsung ML-1210, having very good characteristics, has a very low price for a laser printer. It is because of this fact this device falls into the line of being more domestic than office printers. So we will consider it from the point of view of a home PC user and will start with the configuration and technical characteristics.

Having opened the box, for which we paid our hard-earned $200-$210 (the price on the day the review was published), we find the following contents in it:

  • Laser printer Samsung ML-1210
  • Cartridge (in sealed packaging)
  • Network cable
  • Centronix cable
  • Driver disk
  • A sheet of thick paper containing instructions for installing the software, installing the cartridge and preparing to turn on the printer for the first time

It seems to be a completely normal package, but personally I found it insufficient. Considering that, in addition to the usual parallel interface, the Samsung ML-1210 also has a USB interface, it would be logical to expect the presence of USB cable. Even though the price will be slightly higher, the user will not have to run around the shops looking for this very cable. In addition, the absence of normal instructions in the kit is very disappointing. The instructions that come with the printer on disk are universal for several models Samsung printers, And technical specifications, stated in it, do not quite correspond to the actual characteristics of the ML-1210 model. You can find more truthful information on the site, which I will give you now. So, the manufacturer stated the following technical characteristics for the Samsung ML-1210 printer:

Print speed12 pages per minute

In my opinion, these characteristics are more than acceptable for a home printer. Whether they correspond to real ones, I will tell you later, when I describe the actual tests of the ML-1210, but for now I want to draw your attention to the very useful functions that this model is equipped with and which will certainly appeal to many users. Here are some of them:

  • Printing multiple pages on one side of a sheet (up to 16)
  • Printing with scaling (scale 10-100)
  • Poster printing (up to 6x6 sheets)
  • Printing overlays
  • Printing watermarks

Attractive? Well, the only thing missing is the ability to print on both sides, but it’s simply indecent to demand so much from a fairly cheap printer!

Externally, the ML-1210 does not stand out in anything special. Quite normal for modern printer design and rather modest dimensions.

The printer is equipped with two output trays. One of them is for plain paper, and the second is for envelopes. And do not try to insert sheets of plain A4 paper into the envelope tray. No matter how hard you try, the ML-1210 will think that it is dealing with envelopes and, accordingly, will not fully use the length of the A4 sheet. Convincing the printer that there is plain paper in the envelope tray is neither possible nor necessary. There is only one output tray in the ML-1210, but in addition to it there is a slot for paper exit. Located right on the front of the printer, it is used primarily when printing on thick paper. Of course, it can be used when printing on regular paper, but the sheets coming out of the printer will take up space on your desktop and, of course, will not be stacked as smoothly as when issued to the output tray.

The control and display panel consists of three buttons and three LED indicators. The LEDs indicate an error condition (for example, a paper jam), the end of paper or envelopes in the input trays, and the arrival/presence of data in the printer buffer. There are no more difficulties with the buttons. One of them is designed to do nothing more than print a test page. You can print a test page regardless of whether the printer is connected to your computer or not. The other two buttons are more useful to the user in everyday life. The “Toner Save Mode” button turns on the economical printing mode. In this mode, the button is illuminated with a matte green light and looks ridiculous, but you know in which mode the printer is operating. The remaining button “Cancel/repeat printing” has two functions. In print mode, it allows you to cancel printing. But when you click on the same button after printing is complete, the ML-1210 will print the last page of the document for you.

In the photographs I have provided you can see the cartridges used in the ML-1210. The cartridge supplied with the printer is not fully refilled and is designed to print 500 pages of text (approximately 5% coverage). But having bought new cartridge or by refilling the one that comes in the kit (after it runs out), you can count on printing 2,500 pages.

From the external inspection of the ML-1210 we move on to a consideration of what comes with it software. IN in this case, all the screen copies I provided were made in Windows environment XP Professional. I hope that with these examples you will be able to more fully appreciate functionality printer.

After installing the driver from the disk supplied with the printer, you have quite a wide range of options for customizing the ML-1210 to suit your specific needs. The Russification of all driver tabs was done correctly, and if you still have any questions, you can refer to the user manual, which describes the printer settings in sufficient detail. The manual is supplied on the same disk as the driver, but, unfortunately, the quality of its Russification leaves much to be desired. However, if necessary, you can figure it out.

In the “Paper” tab, you can manage parameters inherent to almost any printer. Here you can set the paper type and size, the paper feed tray or its automatic selection, and the sheet orientation (portrait/landscape). In addition, in the same tab you can set the number of printed copies of the document if you want to replicate it.

In addition to the parameters related to the graphics itself, in this tab you can manage some printer parameters that are not directly related to graphics. This controls the energy saving mode and the printer's response to paper jams. All other parameters relate directly to the graphic part. You can change the resolution, print density and programmatically control the toner saving mode. Unfortunately, when you enable toner save software, the corresponding button on the printer control panel is not illuminated, so if you always want to know which mode the printer is operating in, use hardware mode switching.

It is in this tab that the management of additional and, perhaps, very useful features, which the ML-1210 is equipped with. If you are not happy with standard output, which prints one document page on a single physical page, you can have the ML-1210 print multiple document pages on the same physical page. The driver allows you to place up to 16 pages on one sheet. If you do not need to reduce the pages of the document, but rather increase them, then in the same tab you can set the appropriate output. By maximizing one page of your document, you can get a 6x6 sheet poster. When withdrawing graphic information You may also find two other output modes useful. This is the “Fit on Page” mode, which is useful when the output graphic image its size exceeds the size of the sheet, and “Print with scaling”, in which it is possible to change the print scale in 1% increments.

Printing overlays comes in handy if you work a lot with business documents. Once you create, for example, your organization's letterhead and specify its use in the overlays tab, you save yourself a lot of work. Each time you output a document, it will be superimposed on the form you created. You can create multiple overlays, reducing the creation of business documents to simple typing.

The ML-1210, of course, cannot make real watermarks, but by using the settings in the “Watermarks” tab, you can somewhat embellish the printed documents. Any text you wish can be printed as if under the main text of the document. At the same time, you can change the brightness of the printing of such “watermarks”, their size, font, position on the page and angle of inclination. Naturally, you can enter the watermark text itself.

At this point, I consider the descriptive part of the printer complete. I hope it was enough for you to appreciate appearance and functional equipment of ML-1210. Next I move on to testing some technical parameters, which, it seems to me, combined with the functionality, allow us to evaluate the attractiveness of this printer as a whole.

"Iron" tests

The printer was tested under normal home conditions (ambient temperature 23 degrees, humidity 55%). The printer under test was connected to the bench computer using the supplied cable (IEEE 1284 (parallel interface)). The bench computer was running Windows XP Professional OS, into which the appropriate driver was installed, supplied on a disk included with the printer.

Warm-up time

Let's assume that you sent a document you created to be printed, but forgot to turn on the printer. Of course, you'll eventually discover this and turn it on, but a cold laser printer will take some time to warm up, so you won't receive your document right away. And when? This depends on the volume of the document and the warm-up time of the printer. It was the latter that I checked in this test. To do this, the printer was “kept” off for 5 hours. A test job was placed in the print queue. After this, the printer was turned on and the time from the moment it was turned on until the first sheet of paper was captured was measured.

So... The warm-up time declared by the manufacturer for the ML-1210 (hereinafter, information taken from) is 25 seconds. My experiments showed that the actual average warm-up time for this printer is 33.5 seconds. Perhaps the manufacturers took measurements of this parameter from the “hibernation” state in which the printer was for some time. But this is not mentioned anywhere and, according to my logic, I believe that the measurement was made from a “cold” state.

First sheet output

During this test, I measured the time from the moment data entered the printer's print buffer until the first sheet came out of the output tray. To do this from text editor One page of text was sent for printing (approximately 5% coverage). Immediately before the test, the same page was printed, that is, the printer was warmed up and was not in hibernation. The result of my measurements showed that the average time for the first sheet to come out is 20.4 seconds, compared with 13 seconds declared by the manufacturer. I considered the end of the measurement to be the moment when the sheet came out of the printer and went into the receiving tray. To clear my conscience, I measured the time from the moment the data entered the print buffer until the sheet emerged from the bowels of the printer. The result is 16.8 seconds, already closer to the stated 13 seconds, however, still slightly higher.

Print speed

Here we come to one of the most important tests - testing typing speed. Based on the 12 pages per minute declared by the manufacturer, I sent 15 pages of text for printing (about 5% fill), but measured the printing time of exactly 12 pages. Further, using simple mathematics, it was not difficult to calculate the number of pages printed in one minute. Why I printed 15 pages, I will explain a little later, but for now I will give the results of measurements.

The average print speed with a resolution of 300 dpi was 11.14 sheets per minute, a value very close to the declared one. When the resolution was set to 600 dpi, the print speed dropped to 8.52 pages per minute, which is explained by the large volume of the file sent for printing. To the results I obtained, I can also add that there is no difference in print speed between normal and economy modes (true for both 300 dpi and 600 dpi resolution).

Now I’ll tell you why I sent 15 pages of text to print for this test. The fact is that I took measurements on 12 pages (I simply took this number from the manufacturer’s statement), but, as it turned out, the ML-1210 tends to “think” before issuing last pages document. All the measurement results I cited above were obtained without taking into account this “thoughtfulness,” since it appeared before printing the 15th page. If you want to print exactly 12 pages, then real time printing at a resolution of 600 dpi will be 1 minute and 29 seconds. I haven't tried printing large volumes of documents, so I can't say how many times the ML-1210 can "think" in one printing session. In my case, when printing up to 30 pages, it appeared only once per session and always before printing the last page.

Print quality

There's no need to describe the ML-1210's print quality in words. Below are scanned examples for normal mode and toner save mode, where you can evaluate the readability of the font different sizes and quality of filling. On my own behalf, I can add that, in my opinion, this quality is more than enough for a home printer.

Typewriter paper (Znamenskaya factory. Paper quality is below average)

Print Boundaries

It is a rare printer that can fill a sheet without leaving any margins, and the ML-1210 is not one of them. On an A4 sheet, it leaves margins of the following sizes: left - 5.3 mm, right - 2.0 mm, top - 5.7 mm, bottom - 1.4 mm. Of course, you won’t be able to print a black and white photograph on the entire sheet, but it seems to me that the ML-1210 is not positioned as a photo printer, and such fields are quite enough for printing documents.

Other nuances

Among other nuances, I would like to highlight one, but it is very significant and positive. It concerns the ML-1210’s ability to work with thick paper. To satisfy my curiosity, I slipped the test printer a linen sheet 0.4 mm thick. I don’t know how much a square meter of such material weighs, and it can hardly be called paper (it’s too hard and dense), but it is used in printing and is ideal for making business cards. Surprisingly, the printer did an excellent job with such material, dispensing it into the paper exit slot. But when trying to guide the sheet into the receiving tray, the ML-1210 could not cope with the rigidity of the linen sheet and froze, turning on the “error” indicator on the front panel. But this cannot be considered a minus, since the documentation indicates that for paper weighing more than 90 g/m2, a paper exit slot should be used.

To buy or not to buy?

Let's look again at the results of my experiments, comparing them with the characteristics declared by the manufacturer. The most convenient way to do this is to summarize everything in one table, which is what I did and now present it to you.

Yes, the manufacturer somewhat exaggerated the performance of the ML-1210, but are its real performance really that bad? For a home printer or a printer for a small office, they are quite satisfactory. We also take into account the size, functionality and low price. As a result, it turns out that among laser printers, the ML-1210 is perhaps the most optimal model for home computers. In general, I recommend...

Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1/10 32/64-bit ( universal driver- recommended for installation)

Windows 2003/2008/2012/XP/Vista/7/8/8.1/10

There are many models on the printing equipment market with compact sizes and high performance. However, not all of them provide low noise during operation and are distinguished by ergonomic controls. Moreover, broad functionality implies a more complex interface. And yet, the Samsung ML-1640 combines good printing capabilities and balanced optional features, the presence of which does not come at the expense of ease of use.

General information about the model

The printer is a traditional laser equipment designed for printing at home and in small offices. The first thing that may surprise you about this development is its small dimensions. In terms of performance, the equipment is not inferior to competitive models from segment leaders, but at the same time, the creators managed to enclose the working hardware in a modest-sized body.

This feature makes the Samsung ML-1640 attractive for use in cramped office spaces. However, this development cannot be classified as a middle class of powerful printers. And not only for the reason disabilities printing production, but also due to certain disadvantages associated with the low reliability of the workflow. For office models that work at a fast and continuous pace, reliability is important, and, unfortunately, the Korean printer cannot boast of this quality. True, it has many other useful qualities.

Printer Specifications

The functional mechanisms have not been tailored to meet the high demands of production, but they are sufficient to solve common household problems. And this is not to mention the generally good quality that the Samsung ML-1640 provides, provided that the appropriate consumables are used.

The technical characteristics of this printer are presented below:

  • Printing productivity - 5000 pages/month.
  • Sheet format for printing - maximum A4.
  • The speed of operations is about 16 ppm.
  • Resolution in black and white printing format - 1200x600 dpi.
  • The time interval before the first print is released on the sheet is 10 seconds.
  • Paper feeding - 150 sheets in standard mode.
  • Output - 100 sheets.
  • Cartridge type - MLT-D108S.
  • Cartridge resource - up to 1500 pages.
  • The printer memory capacity is 8 MB.
  • Interfaces - USB.
  • Noise level - 50 dB.

Technological features of the model

Although the model is focused only on black and white printing, it includes a fairly wide functional base. In particular, Samsung ML-1640 can be combined with software platforms Windows, Mac and Linux. In part, this aspect expands the possibilities of using the equipment not only at home. The universal interface shell also simplifies approaches to organizing the workflow. The large tray loading volume and good printing speed also increase interest in the model from various consumers.

Energy saving is also worth noting. A special mode is provided to save energy. In addition, compared to competitors in its class, the device saves an average of 30% toner. At the same time, the print quality of the Samsung ML-1640 is maintained. The cartridge also does not limit the printer's operating capabilities, allowing you to cope with large volumes work. Regarding the application of relatively different techniques, the targets for this model are ordinary A4 sheets, labels with cards, as well as recycled and thin film material.

Positive reviews about the model

The model is inexpensive, productive by average standards and functional. These qualities can be put at the top of the list of characteristics that are noted in positive reviews. It is energy efficiency and low printing costs that determine the distribution of this device in small offices. Sometimes such equipment is also used for professional needs, where a combination of optimal quality and increased printing speed is required, but here there are other limitations - in terms of reliability.

Many owners also consider the ergonomics of the Samsung ML-1640 to be a plus. Reviews of the case highlight the combination of a traditional and neat design with a compact size. The printer can be installed in a corner on the table, and this will not affect the ease of handling it during work.

Negative reviews

Unfortunately, there are also negative impressions from using a Korean printer. Refilling the printer, which is carried out according to the classical scheme using chip cartridges, has received a lot of criticism. By the way, experienced users Initially, it is recommended to flash the system, which will allow you to install refilled cassettes without reading information through the boards. It is undesirable to do zeroing, since it gives only short-term results.

There are also negative reviews in terms of the immediate performance of the Samsung ML-1640 printer. Reviews in some cases note a slow start to printing. However, the speed of initial capacity loading depends on the complexity of the operation. The mechanisms for loading paper to start the process do not cause any complaints, but during operation itself under overload conditions the equipment may fail. In this regard, there is also a lack modern devices protection of electronic filling.

Conclusion

As printing technologies develop, the range of functions that such equipment is equipped with even in basic versions expands. As a rule, a new option only overloads the technical stuffing, but does not have a fundamental impact on the quality of work. But the cost of introducing new features increases by tens of percent.

In turn, the Samsung ML-1640 printer shows another example - a balanced combination of performance capabilities and price tag. We can say that all the functions and performance indicators of this device are completely within its price. It is not high, so you should prepare for the common disadvantages of budget equipment. In this case, they are expressed in a small volume of cartridges, modest print settings and some problems with electronic components. These disadvantages are compensated by the compact dimensions of the case and simple control of the equipment.

Terrible model

Disadvantages of the printer/MFP: Disposable printer.

Comment about the printer/MFP:

The model is successful for its price.
No wonder it has been in demand for several years.
One big minus is that the printer is disposable. The cartridge costs almost the same as a new printer including the cartridge.
Previously, it was possible to reflash the printer by downloading the firmware from the Internet.
But after the manufacturer has strengthened the protection, flashing is only possible in service center and even then not in every case. The cost of reflashing increases the price of the printer by 50 percent, and this moves the printer into a different price range and makes the purchase irrational.

Review #2 about Samsung ML-2160 MFP

Regular model

Experience using a printer/MFP: less than a month

Advantages of the printer/MFP Prints quickly, price Disadvantages of the printer/MFP: Cartridges are expensive
New firmware 1.01.02.XX and 3.00.02.XX
Late 2013 Samsung of the Year released new firmware versions for ML-2160, ML-2165, ML-2167, ML-2168, namely versions 1.01.02.00, 1.01.02.01. They haven’t forgotten about ML-2165W, ML-2168W either: new versions 3.00.02.00, 3.00.02.01.
Distinctive feature new firmware - much more thorough protection against modification; therefore, fixed firmware for new versions does not exist and their appearance is in doubt. The firmware in ML-2160, ML-2165, ML-2167, ML-2168 is stored not in a separate chip (SPI Flash), but in the processor, so you cannot simply downgrade the version, this is possible through a JTAG programmer and the corresponding software, but instructions in there is no free access, and the cost of the programmer will be the same as several new printers :) You can look for people who have such a programmer and downgrade the version for ~25$ (you will need to send them a formatting board). The cheapest option is to buy chips compatible with new versions.
The exception is printers with Wi-Fi (ML-2165W and ML-2168W), their firmware is located in SPI Flash, so if you have a programmer, you can downgrade the version and then order the usual fixed firmware.
If your printer's firmware version is not new (ends with 01.XX, not 02.XX), do not update it under any circumstances! because otherwise you will kill the printer...
