Features of activating turbo mode on laptop PCs

Laptops can operate from two sources: mains power and batteries. When powered by a battery, the OS, to increase operating life (by default), “tries” to reduce energy consumption, including by reducing (CPU). Therefore, turning on turbo mode on a laptop has a number of features.

In older models Device BIOS had options to enable and configure this mode. Nowadays, manufacturers are trying to minimize the possibility of user intervention in the operation of the CPU, and often this parameter is missing. There are two ways to activate the technology:

  • Via BIOS.

Processors Intel Core I5 and I7, in addition to the set rated frequency, can operate at a higher speed. This speed is achieved thanks to special Turbo Boost technology. When all drivers are installed, this technology is enabled and works by default. However, if you have installed all the software and there is no acceleration observed, it is worth monitoring Turbo Boost.

What is Turbo Boost and how does it work?

Turbo Boost is a technology that is designed specifically for Intel processors Core I5 ​​and I7 of the first three generations. It allows you to temporarily overclock the core frequency above the established nominal. Moreover, such overclocking is performed taking into account the current, voltage, temperature of the device and the state of the operating system itself, that is, it is safe. However, this increase in processor speed is temporary. It depends on the operating conditions, load type, number of cores and platform design. In addition, overclocking using Turbo Boost is only possible for Intel Core I5 ​​and I7 processors of the first three generations. Full list devices that support this technology are as follows:

It is also worth noting that Turbo Boost technology only works on operating Windows systems 7 and 8. Windows Vista, XP and 10 do not support this technology.

Intel Turbo Boost- a technology that automatically increases the frequency of one or more processor cores above the nominal value at maximum load, if the temperature and power consumption remain within its specifications. It allows you to increase the performance of both single-threaded and multi-threaded applications; currently, its influence is especially noticeable in applications that primarily use one or two cores (most modern games).

Intel Turbo Boost Technology is supported on desktop and mobile, including variants Extreme Edition, desktop and mobile, as well as server Intel Xeon for connectors. Full list at intel.com.

Turbo Boost is usually included in Motherboard BIOS cards by default (and it can be forcibly disabled using the corresponding CMOS Setup item), and its activation at a particular time depends on the load, created by applications and reserves for temperature and energy consumption.

The increase in clock frequency is carried out in portions of 133 MHz, its maximum final value depends on the model and the number of active cores at a particular time, while all active cores receive the same increase in frequency. For example, desktop Core processors i7 920/930/940/950/960 can increase the frequency of three or all four cores by 133 MHz, and one or two (provided the others are inactive) by 266 MHz.

Mobile processors are capable of changing their frequency much more strongly using this technology; for example, the Core i5-540UM is capable of using four 133 MHz portions with both active cores, i.e. accelerate from 1.2 GHz to 1.73 GHz, and with one active core - six, i.e. up to 2 GHz.

The maximum clock speed indicated in the processor specifications in TurboBoost mode is usually achieved with one or (maximum) two active cores. When overclocking a processor by raising the reference clock frequency, the performance increase in Turbo Boost mode is proportional to the performance increase in nominal mode.

Intel Turbo Boost 2.0- this technology is supported by processors based on the Intel Sandy Bridge microarchitecture. The main difference from the first version is the ability to overclock not only processor cores, but also the built-in processor graphics core.

AMD Turbo CORE- a similar technology for dynamically increasing the clock frequency of active cores, at the time of writing this FAQ is found only in processors based on the Thuban core, the fundamental differences from Turbo Boost are as follows: the maximum increase (in older models it reaches 500 MHz) in clock frequency can be obtained simultaneously by up to three active cores , and inactive cores are not turned off, but are put into low-power mode with clock frequency 800MHz.

Modern programs and games require high technical characteristics. Not everyone can afford to purchase new processors, since this often means purchasing compatible ones. motherboard, RAM, power supply. You can get a free performance boost only through competent and thoughtful overclocking of the GPU and CPU. For overclocking, owners of AMD processors are encouraged to use the AMD OverDrive program, specially designed for this purpose, developed by the same manufacturer.

Overclocking an AMD processor using AMD OverDrive

Make sure your processor is supported by this proprietary program. The chipset must be one of the following: AMD 770, 780G, 785G, 790FX/790GX/790X, 890FX/890G//890GX, 970, 990FX/990X, A75, A85X (Hudson-D3/D4), otherwise you will not be able to use the application. Additionally, you may need to go into the BIOS and disable some options there:

  • "Cool'n'Quiet"— if the overclocking power approaches 4000 MHz;
  • "C1E"(may be called "Enhanced Halt State");
  • "Spread Spectrum";
  • "Smart CPU Fan Control".

Set all these parameters to the value "Disable". If you do not disable some of these options, it is possible that OverDrive will not see or be unable to overclock.

  1. The process of installing the program is as simple as possible and boils down to confirming the installer’s actions. After downloading and running installation file you will see the following warning:

    This states that incorrect actions can cause damage to the motherboard, processor, as well as system instability (data loss, incorrect picture display), decreased system performance, reduced service life of the processor, system components and/or the system in general, as well as its general collapse. AMD also states that you perform all manipulations at your own peril and risk, and by using the program you accept the User License Agreement; the company is not responsible for your actions and their possible consequences. Therefore, make sure that everything important information has a copy, and strictly follow all overclocking rules. After reading this warning, click on "OK" and start the installation.

  2. Installed and running program will greet you with the next window. All system information about the processor, memory and other important data is located here.
  3. On the left is a menu through which you can get to other sections, of which we are interested in the tab "Clock/Voltage".

  4. Switch to it - further actions will happen in the block "Clock". Additionally, you will need to monitor the state of frequencies, the block with which is located slightly higher. You will probably also have to resort to changing the voltage, but this must be done extremely carefully and not always. All work blocks are indicated in the screenshot below.
  5. The first step is to disable overclocking of all cores - we will overclock only the first (more precisely, indicated by the number «0» ). This is necessary because this program adjusts the frequencies of the remaining cores to the overclocked one when the load on the CPU occurs. Experienced users, of course, will be able to spend time and manually increase the frequencies of each core individually, but for beginners in this matter it is better not to do anything like that. Moreover, if you overclock all the cores at once, you may well encounter increased heat generation, which the computer may not be able to cope with. You probably already know about the results of CPU overheating, so we won’t dwell on this topic.

    To disable overclocking of all cores, in the block "Clock" uncheck the box "Select All Cores". For some users, this action is not available due to enabled technology "Turbo Core Control". Click on the button with the same name to disable this option.

  6. In the window that opens, uncheck the box "Enable Turbo Core", click on "OK". As a result, the option "Select All Cores" will become available.
  7. Now move the item slider "CPU Core 0 Multiplier" to the right literally 1-2 positions.
  8. After this, be sure to look at the frequency that you get as a result of moving the slider. It is displayed in the item "Target Speed". "Current Speed", as is already clear, the current frequency.
  9. After changes made click on the button "Apply". The acceleration has already happened. Ideally, the operation of the computer should not be affected after this. If even a small boost causes artifacts, black screens, BSOD or other problems, stop overclocking.
  10. It is recommended that after this you immediately go to test how the CPU will behave with the new settings. Play resource-intensive games while leaving OverDrive running to test temperatures (the processor should not overheat under any circumstances).
