Technical effects

Typical sound effects that are used when preparing audio material are:

  • Echo- one or more delayed signals that are added to the original. For the effect to be perceived as echo, the delay must be on the order of 50 ms or more. The effect can be achieved using both analog and digital processing. If a significant number of delayed signals are played over a period of several seconds, the resulting signal creates the effect of being immersed in a large room and is perceived as a reverberation effect.
  • Reverse echo(English reverse echo) - a rising effect that is created by reversing the audio signal with an echo effect. The inventors of this effect are considered Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin (for example, the song “Whole Lotta Love”).
  • Flanger(English flanger) - a delayed signal is added to the original one with a variable delay of up to 10 ms. This effect is achieved digital processing, although achieved by playing the same recording on two synchronized players and then mixing it. To achieve the effect, the operator places his finger on the edge (English flange) of one of the disks, somewhat slowing down its movement, and therefore its sound. When the operator removes his finger, the mechanism accelerates the movement of the disk, synchronizing it with the other.
  • Phaser(eng. phaser) - the signal is bifurcated, part of it is filtered by a phase filter to create a phase shift, after which the filtered and unfiltered signals are mixed. The phaser effect is similar to the flanger effect, but is difficult to reproduce on analog equipment. The phaser is used to achieve "synthesis" or "electronization" of natural sounds such as human speech. The voice of the character C-3PO from the movie Star Wars was created by editing the voice of the actor phaser.
  • Horus(eng. chorus) - a delayed signal is added to the original one with a constant delay. The delay should be small to avoid the echo effect, but greater than 5 ms, otherwise wave interference will lead to a flanger effect. Often delayed signals are slightly shifted in pitch to achieve a more realistic ensemble sound.
  • Overdrive(English overdrive) the effect produces distorted sounds, can imitate the voice of robots or radiotelephone signals. Classic overdrive entails clipping the signal when its absolute value exceeds a certain threshold.
  • Pitch offset(eng. pitch shift) increases or decreases the pitch of sound signals. This effect is often used to correct the singing of pop singers who sing out of tune [ ] . The playback speed (tempo) remains constant.
  • Time dilation(English time stretching) - unlike pitch shifting, this effect changes the speed of playback of the audio signal (tempo) without changing its pitch.
  • Resonance effect- enhances overtones at given frequencies.
  • Robotic voice effect- changing the human voice using devices, for example, a vocoder, in order to give it a “non-human” sound, mainly
