Instructions on how to flash a Xiaomi MI 6 smartphone. Unlocking and Russifying a smartphone, installing custom or official firmware. You are the proud owner of a Xiaomi MI 6 phone, and you have a desire (or need) to update your smartphone to a new firmware version. In order to flash Xiaomi MI 6 to the official firmware, simply follow the instructions below. Well, if you want to flash your smartphone with custom firmware, you first need to find out what firmware is on your smartphone and then determine whether the MI 6 Bootloader is locked.

Official firmware Xiaomi Mi6

The first method is to update the system using a built-in program in the smartphone firmware

Download the latest firmware from. xiaomi website
Connect your smartphone to your computer and use a micro-USB cable to copy the firmware file to the ‘downloaded_rom’ folder in the device’s internal memory.

Launch the ‘Updater’ application on your smartphone. Click on the “…” icon (three dots) in the upper right corner. Click on “Choose update package” and select the firmware that you put in the ‘downloaded_rom’ folder
(silverrick's note: you must turn on the Internet, otherwise the update will not start)

After selecting the desired firmware file, the device will begin the upgrade. When the update is complete, the device will automatically boot with the new firmware.

Xiaomi MI 6 firmware via MiFlash

Xiaomi MI 6 firmware via MiFlash with locked bootloader

This method of flashing a smartphone is worth using if you have a locked bootloader (bootloader) and you do not want to unlock it or you are unable to unlock the bootloader using the standard method.

If the bootloader is locked on a smartphone, it needs to be flashed only in EDL mode; with the bootloader unlocked, just in Fastboot mode.

How to enter Xiaomi MI 6 phone into EDL mode

You can enter Xiaomi MI 6 into EDL mode via a PC using the command line. To do this, connect the phone with a USB cable to the computer, and in the device manager it will appear like this: “Mi 6 portable device”

Lower the shutter on the phone, click on the “Connected in charging mode” notification, select “File transfer (MTP)”. The manager will update the list of devices, but the device name should remain unchanged.

In the phone we enable the menu for developers. If the language is English, then do this: Settings –> About Phone –> tap 7 times on “MIUI version”. You are now a developer. Next, enable USB debugging: Settings –> Additional Settings –> Developer Options –> USB debugging and Enable USB Debugging. The device will begin initializing again, and again its name should remain unchanged. However, now you can test the operation of adb. Enter in the command line (not run as Administrator):

The phone will display the request “Allow debugging from this computer?” To which we answer OK. In the command line, the words “List of devices attached” will appear, below which there will be an alphanumeric code - this, in fact, is your phone. Next we write to the KS:

If after this command the phone simply reboots, then the method is not suitable for you. This is normal, this method may not work on some devices with a locked bootloader. The latest MIUI firmware does not allow this.

The phone is in EDL mode, Device Manager will show the new Qualcomm HS-USB QLoader 9008 device.

Directly flashing the smartphone to the official firmware via MiFlash

Download the required firmware for xiaomi mi 6 (you must download only the stable firmware version)

Unzip the STABLE firmware downloaded for fastboot to the root of Disk C (It doesn’t matter where exactly, the main thing is that the total length of characters does not exceed 256 and without Cyrillic on the way.) It’s better to unzip with WInRAR, because otherwise, through 7z you will have to do this twice.

And the actual process of flashing the Xiaomi Mi 6 smartphone.

We run MiFlash.exe as administrator (on Win 10 it is located along the path C:\XiaoMi\XiaoMiFlash\XiaoMiFlash.exe, or on previous versions - C:\Program Files\Xiaomi\MiPhone\MiFlash.exe).

Click “Flash”. The firmware has started, which is confirmed by the green progress bar and the log of the files being flashed. The duration of the firmware is approximately 5 minutes. Upon successful completion, the status is “The operation is completed successfully” or simply “success” or “done” (I don’t remember). After this, the phone will NOT start on its own. You need to disconnect the wire and hold the power button until the Mi logo appears. The first launch takes a long time. This is fine.

Attention!

When switching to Weekly/Developer firmware, which have been released since January 2017, we get a brick with a bootlap, the engineering cable no longer helps. There is no way to flash through miflash, EDL still doesn’t work.
Opening the device and disconnecting the battery cables does not help (the phone lay in this state for 2 hours, but it still did not start).
Exit: download the Chinese version of Mi PC Suite. put the phone into recovery mode, volume up key and power button. 3 lines will appear in Chinese, select the last line, and a picture of a smartphone with a cable will appear on the screen. We launch Mi PC Suite, connect the phone, a window in Chinese will appear in the program, click on the only button. Then a window appears indicating what firmware is installed. Next, the first line - click, the explorer opens, asks you to specify the path to the firmware file (Attention!! The program will not allow you to install either the global stable software or the Chinese development software, it will swear in Chinese). Download Chinese stable firmware. We show the way to it. Next, the firmware is checked and you will see a green inscription, which means everything is ok. Click on 1 button. A bar and 0% appear in the program on the computer. The bar on the computer does not move and the percentages do not appear either. A bar appears on the phone and fills up. We wait about 10 minutes. The phone will reboot itself and log into the system.

Xiaomi MI 6 firmware via MiFlash with unlocked bootloader

If your device is locked, here is the Xiaomi Mi 6 smartphone

To flash the phone's firmware, we need to enter it into Fastboot mode. Turn off the phone, then hold down the Power button + Volume Down button “-“. The phone will boot into fastboot mode, the phone will display a hare wearing earflaps repairing an android robot, you can connect it to the PC.

Download the official firmware for fastboot to your PC - weekly international Mi6, Stable international Mi 6

Unzip the firmware downloaded for fastboot to the root of Disk C (It doesn’t matter where exactly, the main thing is that the total length of characters does not exceed 256 and without Cyrillic on the way.) It’s better to unzip with WInRAR, because otherwise, through 7z you will have to do this twice.

Let's start with the firmware. We run MiFlash.exe as administrator (on Win 10 it is located along the path C:\XiaoMi\XiaoMiFlash\XiaoMiFlash.exe, or on previous versions - C:\Program Files\Xiaomi\MiPhone\MiFlash.exe).
Click “Refresh”, and this is what the program window will look like after a short “thought”:

In MiFlash, click “Select” (new MiFlash) or “Browse” (old MiFlash) and select the folder with the firmware files. Correctly specify the folder with the firmware in accordance with what is shown in the screenshot below! Not the images folder, but the parent folder to it.

Click “Flash”. The firmware has started, which is confirmed by the green progress bar and the log of the files being flashed. The duration of the firmware is approximately 5 minutes. If completed successfully, the status is “The operation is completed successfully”. The phone should, in theory, turn on by itself, but if this does not happen, you need to disconnect the wire and hold the power button until the Mi logo appears. The first launch takes a long time. This is fine.

Firmware for custom recovery TWRP recovery on xiaomi mi 6

To begin with, a small lyrical digression.
After all the procedures listed below, all settings, programs, files, etc. will be deleted from the phone. Therefore, we transfer the necessary folders and files to the computer. And you can make a backup of the program with settings, call history, SMS, and phone settings (less fiddling later) Go to the phone settings - additionally - restore and reset - local backup. Let's make a backup. We find the miui folder in Explorer and transfer it to the computer (it contains a backup) After installing TWRP and firmware, drop the miui folder onto the phone and recover from it.

To flash custom recovery on a Xiaomi Mi 6 smartphone, you must first unlock the Bootloader and only then proceed with installing TWRP. You can unlock your smartphone by following the link – Xiaomi Mi 6 smartphone.

We must unlock the bootloader using these instructions. Unlocking bootloaders through the official website of the company (Post ilya0103 #45910388). After receiving permission, I tried to unlock it (the firmware was 7.2.8.0 stable global) but it didn’t work, I flashed Mi5 - Official Firmware 7 (OS 6.0) (Post by yuandrey #48709141) from the Chinese developer from the header using these instructions. Everything was unlocked the first time.

I think that all drivers and ADB should be installed on the computer, if not, then take it from the header and install it.

We enable “USB debugging” on the phone (tap “build number” 7 times, the “for developers” menu will appear and the switch is on there)

We place the downloaded TWRP in the folder with ADB, renaming it “recovery.img” The ADB folder should look like this or something like this

Important: In case of an error/refusal to flash, we try to write not “recovery.img”, but simply “recovery”, if this option does not work, then we write “recovery.img.img”
In order to see what resolution you have, write the command “dir”

Now go to the folder with ADB and open the terminal by pressing and holding the shift key, and right-click anywhere in this folder, and in the menu “open command prompt window”

Then we connect the phone to the computer and reboot the device into fastboot mode, with the phone turned off, pressing the “Power + Volume Down” button simultaneously. A hare and the inscription fastboot will appear on the body screen.

We check the connection between the body and the computer; to do this, enter the command fastboot devices in the terminal and press enter. The window should look like this

If all is well, upload the firmware to the phone. To do this, enter the command in the terminal

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

and press enter. The window should look like this

That's it, TWRP is flashed. During initial boot, the phone may not be able to log into TWRP using the buttons. Exit - enter the command in the terminal - fastboot boot recovery.img press enter and the phone will reboot into TWRP, or try holding down the power + volume up buttons and release when the “Mi” icon appears.

When loading into TWRP, the body does not respond to presses, wait for the first 4-5 minutes, do not panic. Sometimes it doesn’t respond at all and requires a second reboot into recovery.

Select the language in TRPV (Russian is available) If it asks for a password, click cancel. Further, the “date” section is locked and is not mounted in TRVP, so if there are firmware files or something else on the phone, TRVP simply won’t see them. To check this, go to mount in TRVP and check the data box. If the checkbox is checked, go to the recovery section, find the sdcard, open it, if you see your folders and files (I didn’t see it), then there is no need to format the data. We copy the SuperSu installation file to the smartphone’s memory and flash it via TRWP recovery.

In trvp, go to the “cleaning” (or Wipe) section, click “format data” and in the “yes” window that opens. When you wipe, all user data is deleted. After all these procedures, in order to avoid bugs, many advise rebooting TWRP. To do this, go to the main recovery screen and click reboot, then click reboot in Recovery. You will restart in recovery

Installing custom firmware via TWRP recovey on Xiaomi Mi6

In order to install custom firmware on a smartphone, the phone must have an unlocked bootloader and a custom TWRP Recovery installed. If there are no 1 and 2, read above.

Xiaomi Mi 6 review

I've been using it for a couple of weeks, the smartphone works perfectly, but there are minor problems with notifications. Of course, there are problems with wireless payment (Android/Samsung Pay). If the firmware had been global, no problems would have arisen. I'm happy with the camera, I won't compare it with anything, it's just decent. The battery charge lasts for one full day.
The games just fly, but this is understandable - they use top-end hardware.
Another minus is the lack of a 3.5 headphone jack; I had to buy wireless headphones so as not to worry about the adapter included in the kit. Charging from 10% to 100% takes approximately an hour and a half.
