How to install Windows 10 from a flash drive on an Asus laptop

Relatively recently, Windows introduced its new version, and all update lovers immediately began downloading it onto their laptops and computers. Especially for them, in this article we will look at step-by-step algorithm Windows installations 10 from a flash card to an Asus laptop.

How to install Windows 10 from a flash drive on a laptop Asus k53s, x540s and other models

If you encounter problems with your operating system, you can contact service center to restore an ASUS laptop. We use the official utility from Microsoft to create a bootable flash card.

When the file is downloaded, launch it and select “Create installation media for another computer." Here we select “Windows 10”, bit depth and language. Click “Next”.

Check "USB flash memory device". Click “Next” and wait for the download to complete.

Save or copy the information you need from your PC.

Reboot the laptop and get started.

Before booting begins, press the “F2” button several times (in newer versions of Asus laptops “F10”).

Select your flash drive in the “Installation drive” column.

Press “F10” to save changes. The laptop will reboot automatically; after booting, press any key and the system will start.

In the master Windows settings 10 select standard parameters.

Then click on “Install”.

Next you need to enter the key. Upon purchase operating system, you must have this key. Once entered, click “Next”. If you received free update, or activation is provided without a key, click “Skip” or “I don’t have a key.”

After reading, accept the terms of the agreement by checking the “I accept the license terms” checkbox and proceed to “Next”.

In the window that opens, click on “Custom installation”, in which the files are partially saved.

The laptop will install Windows and reboot.

You will again see a request to press a key on a black screen background. Don't press anything, wait.

Upon completion, a window will appear in front of you with a connection to Wi-Fi or immediately a window for entering the key. If there is a key, then enter it, if not, then continue.

Now we configure the settings of your laptop. Select or “Use standard settings"or set everything up manually.

Next you will see the Account input area. If you already have it and are connected to the Internet, then creating a new one makes no sense. If you don’t yet have an account or internet connection, you need to create account For of this computer. At the end of the process, click “Next”.

The final launch stage can last up to half an hour. Do not turn off or restart your laptop during this time.

At the end of the launch, you will see the Desktop in front of you.

Stay on trend. Choose new versions of Windows.

After bringing ASUS ZenBook UX21E in order and SSD upgrade, it was decided to rearrange the operating system from scratch. The choice falls on Windows 10.

Last time there was a little epic with installing Windows 8.1, let's see what happens this time...

Windows 8.1 was installed on the device in the spring of 2014. Almost 4 years have passed since then, do you think ASUS has done anything to support the new OS?

You’re right – nothing :) Because why is it needed? And so everything is fine: recently information flashed in the news that ASUS and Acer control the lion's share of the laptop market.

However, this is a short-sighted decision...

IT gods are insidious and extremely cruel: the local Olympus is a teeming heap of crap, to the top of which sometimes the next “lucky” one breaks out, but after some time he falls to the very bottom under the joyful comments of others.

I believe that such an attitude towards customers who pay a lot of money, and then are forced to buy new devices again and again, is the beginning of the end.

OK, guys, I am a developer myself, I don’t need to explain what development is, what testing is, etc. I know what changing just one line of code leads to. But with all this, the person who gave you the money deserves more than primitive support for one or two operating systems!

In my blog I try to prove that modern hardware can live well for about 10 years and at the same time make its owner happy. You can almost always increase the memory, install an SSD, install the maximum supported processor and move on with your life. Stories from Sony VAIO VGN-AW21SR/B, ASUS ZenBook UX21E are quite successful examples of a second life.

It is clear that sometimes certain hardware support is needed, which cannot be obtained by upgrading the CPU/RAM/HDD. For example, if the processor does not support SLAT, then you will not be able to run the Hyper-V virtual machine on desktop Windows and you will have to buy the appropriate equipment. But does this mean a verdict in other cases?

  • The manufacturer does not want to release drivers and utilities for the new OS? For marketing, is the device all mustache, dead and blue? So open the sources! Post them on github, we will provide the support we need.
  • Are you afraid of intellectual property leakage? Well, hide behind a license so that you can use the code only for non-commercial activities. Otherwise, people will still reverse your inventions (if you don’t believe me: http://tjworld.net), the only question is the quality of the output result.
  • Do you want to raise more money? Sell fresh drivers! I'm serious. Tie them to serial number laptop and sell it for a reasonable bunch of dollars. IMHO it’s quite possible to pay $20-50 and move on with your life.

Let's take, for example, an ACPI driver for Sony VAIO called Sony Firmware Extension Parser (SFEP). There is basically no official support for older devices. But what do you think happened after Sony sold the VAIO division and the new owner focused on the local market? Do you think they now have a new life and everything is being done from scratch? No matter how it is. The same people, the same technologies: they continue to rivet SFEP, but only for new models (translate, for example, this page and see: https://solutions.vaio.com/3147). Now imagine how much legacy code there is... So I don’t think that releasing an updated SFEP for old laptops is such an insoluble problem.

Personally, I would be with those manufacturers who would be with me until the end, but these are just dreams.

Since we're talking about drivers, I can't keep silent about the situation with NVIDIA drivers for mobile systems(AMD probably has the same issue, but I won’t say so, because I haven’t encountered their products).

Try downloading drivers for some GeForce 9600M from the NVIDIA website and installing them. There is a 99% chance that you will receive an error that there is no supported device. Why? But because you need a certified OEM driver, which is downloaded from the hardware manufacturer’s website. It’s like he’s all certified and integrated with the right hardware.

The manufacturer released a couple of driver versions and calmed down on that. And it will do the same! Accordingly, there are no new drivers, and there is no support for new operating systems either.

But it’s not the laptop manufacturer that writes the drivers for the GeForce 9600M, it’s NVIDIA that writes them, they just throw out the OEM device identifiers from the INF file, because it’s not a master’s business. The setup knows nothing about the existence of the GeForce 9600M, hence the installation error! At the same time, all the necessary support is present in the binaries themselves (the code base is the same), they just do not have the necessary digital signatures. Digital signature for a driver is a whole procedure, with certification on the Microsoft side and other joys, so we save.

That is why a hack is possible when people unpack the setup, independently add an INF file, disable digital signature verification and successfully install drivers downloaded from the NVIDIA website.

I don’t know how it is now, but NVIDIA used to periodically release drivers with a full INF file and signatures. Apparently their support has people asking questions: why is the driver not being installed, I have an NVIDIA GPU in my laptop 😦

But most of all, of course, goes to Microsoft support. Incredibly, they have to put kosher information on their Windows Update NVIDIA drivers and distribute to the suffering.

And the original manufacturer seems to have nothing to do with it. The money has been received, thank you everyone, goodbye everyone!

All of the above was written with a specific purpose - to bring the reader to the point I need. But before we get there, I need to throw the last stone at the laptop manufacturers.

So, as we found out earlier, the absence of the required driver on the manufacturer’s website does not mean that it does not exist in nature at all. This is especially true for GPU drivers. With small components, such as touchpads, card readers, USB controllers, it happens differently: sometimes you can’t get drivers anywhere, there is no information on the original manufacturer’s website.

As for the software that is written by the laptop manufacturer itself (all sorts of ACPI drivers, WiFi/Bluetooth on/off switches, BIOS flashers, etc.), in most cases, after some time they stop updating on the device’s support page. Like your time is up.

However, work on the software continues to be in full swing. Bugs are fixed, new versions are released. Links to files appear on any hidden or support pages. Sometimes a version is released for a newer device, but... The code base is common - support automatically extends to the old one.

At the same time, there are no changes on the laptop page and this is a big disgrace. What’s the problem with making links to the released updates there and honestly saying that guys, without guarantees, in theory it should work, but try and figure it out for yourself? IMHO it's better than nothing.

So, now we know how and where to move, let’s get started...

EMBODIMENT

Windows 10 installation proceeds without any problems. It is important to have access to the Internet to improve necessary drivers from the Microsoft website.

The less software we supply from the manufacturer, the better. Firstly, it will be easier, and secondly, if the appropriate support is provided by Microsoft by default, it is often of better quality than that provided by the manufacturer.

The system starts and Device Manager shows that all devices are installed without conflicts. Great, that's a very good sign.

When Windows 8.1 was installed on the laptop, the following list of software was left for installation:

  1. Keyboard Device Filter Utility
  2. ATKACPI Driver and Hotkey Related Utilities
  3. Power4Gear Hybrid Utility
  4. ASUS Wireless Switch (Wireless Console3) Utility

Keyboard Device Filter Utility

Driver for keyboard remapping. If you press a key and the character you enter is not the one you pressed, you will need to install this driver. It is not required for the Russian keyboard, as it is probably not required for the USA and most European ones.

ACPI driver adds, in particular, support for Fn+ key combinations, as well as the function of turning on/off wireless network adapters (WiFi, Bluetooth). Details can be found here: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1015071. This driver is necessary because after installing Windows 10, the Fn+ combinations do not work, especially adjusting the sound and screen brightness (the system sliders are not displayed).

Power4Gear Hybrid Utility

A set of power supply diagrams from ASUS. To be honest, based on my experience of using Power4Gear in Windows 8.1, I really didn’t like it. I didn’t feel much difference between what Microsoft provides. We won't install it.

A utility for turning on/off wireless networks looks like a must-have, but more on that later.

So, since we are dealing with drivers and digital signatures, then it’s in our interests to find the latest one designed for Windows 10. It’s clear that there’s nothing like that on the device’s support page. But that doesn't mean ASUS hasn't done anything. I did it and even posted it on general access, only in a semi-closed form (something can suddenly be found on the support pages, and something just lies on dlcdnet.asus.com).

Fortunately, there is a person who periodically publishes links to fresh news. Usually I don’t like downloading drivers from third-party sites, but here the links are honest and lead to ASUS. Meet: https://ivanrf.com/en/latest-asus-drivers-for-windows-10!

ASUS renamed ATKACPI Driver and Hotkey Related Utilities V ATK Package. Download and install ATK Package 1.0.0057 64-Bit (since we have the appropriate platform).

After installation, the sound and screen brightness adjustment appears, but the brightness slider is displayed in the system style, and the sound slider in the ASUS style, which is not very beautiful.

Adjusting the sound volume from ASUS

To ASUS's credit, this behavior can be disabled in the following way:

  1. Launch the application C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ATK Package\ATKOSD2\ATKOSDMgr.exe
  2. In the dialog that opens, uncheck Enable ASUS On-Screen Display and click OK

Enable ASUS On-Screen Display checkbox

After this, the system slider will be used to adjust the brightness.

WIRELESS SWITCH UTILITY

This utility was needed for operating systems younger than Windows 10, to conveniently enable/disable wireless networks. However, in Windows 10 a notification panel has appeared in which you can perform similar actions, only in the standard way.

The situation is complicated by the fact that the belief ASUS Wireless Switch (Wireless Console3) Utility available only for Windows 7. Considering the uselessness of the utility in Windows 10, I decided not to install it.

But there was a small problem: the F2 key has a built-in LED, the glow of which signals that wireless networks are turned on. Accordingly, the combination Fn+F2 lights it up or turns it off. In theory, the following should be responsible for this functionality: ATK Package, but without installed ASUS Wireless Switch (Wireless Console3) Utility desynchronization occurs: when the system starts, the LED does not light up, although wireless networks included. Subsequent presses of Fn+F2 at some point correct the situation.

I strongly suspect that this is just a bug in ATK Package, it is extremely illogical for Wireless Switch Utility I was igniting the LED on F2.

Anyway, there are two options:

  1. Put Wireless Switch Utility and have an alarm on F2, but at the same time get an ancient application that duplicates the functionality of Windows 10
  2. Don't put Wireless Switch Utility, but also not have the LED turned on.

Personally, I decided to abandon the installation and see what happens in the next versions ATK Package, maybe the problem will be fixed.

THE LAST OF THE MOHICANE

The last problem that emerged when testing the device on Windows 10 is the lack of support for gestures on the touchpad. In principle, this was expected, since they did not work in Windows 8.1 either.

This time I decided to spend more time on the problem and try to find best solution. For reasons unknown to me, my laptop has a touchpad from Sentelic with an identifier ACPI\STLC400.

On the device support page there are drivers for Windows 7 for Sentelic and for Elantech, from which we can conclude that the design of the laptop changed and Sentelic was in the first versions, and then ASUS for some reason abandoned its use and switched to Elantech.

Both drivers are quite ancient, then there is a driver called , and it is available for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.

What's happened ASUS Smart Gesture (Touchpad Driver)? This is actually a package containing several drivers, but none of the versions have support for Sentelic. Accordingly, the installation attempt ASUS Smart Gesture (Touchpad Driver) on ASUS ZenBook UX21E with a Sentelic touchpad will result in an error.

I corrected the installer ASUS Smart Gesture (Touchpad Driver) so that he installed the driver from Sentelic, everything was installed, but the gestures did not work. Apparently there are discrepancies in software interfaces and here there are no special options.

We couldn't find anything about the STLC400 on the Sentelic website. Also, nothing worked with other manufacturers (Sentelic was installed, for example, in Lenovo): either there is a different version of the device, or there is no support for gestures.

As a result, I installed drivers from Windows 7, just like last time. Sadly…

So, Windows 10 works great on the ASUS ZenBook UX21E: we have had a successful flight within a month. It would be a total joy if the ATK Package would fire up F2 normally and Microsoft would provide support for Sentelic out of the box. But there must be something that doesn't work?

If you bought an Asus device, be it a tablet or a computer, then before you start, you need to download the Asus driver for Windows 10. Of course, Asus devices differ from each other, and they have different components, but we know a universal solution that resolves the issue with drivers 100%.

Peculiarities

For those who think that downloading an Asus driver means downloading just one file, we have good news: this is exactly so! Of course, the driver set includes a huge number of drivers, including:
  • And dozens of other drivers;
However, you can download just one program that will replace everything for you at once Asus drivers. This program is . This is what we offer to download on this page. In fact, this is not even a driver, it is a utility that allows you to automatically select drivers for any device. It is fully compatible with all Asus devices and allows you to download all the latest and greatest drivers.

For those who are worried that their Windows 10 is not 32 bit, but 64 bit, we want to reassure you - this is of course important for drivers, you need to download the appropriate version, but the program itself will select the right option. The same can be said about the variation of the OS itself. Don't worry about the driver language. Even if they are in English, you will not see this, because the drivers work in background, providing work third party programs. So, if you need to download Asus drivers, you can safely do so.

And if you have problems with a specific driver, we recommend downloading it first
