From time to time, many users want to perform such an interesting operation as checking RAM.

The fact is that very often in the operating system Windows operational The memory cannot cope with the load placed on it, although, judging by its volume, it should.

In other words, the computer does not produce the speed that it should, based on the amount of RAM.

In general, this is far from the only problem that arises with memory in Windows operating systems.

Additional utility memtest86+

In addition to the standard means described above, there is more than one special utility to check RAM.

All of them can be easily downloaded and some of them are even in Russian. This option is just right for Windows 10 and Windows XP.

Such programs also do an excellent job of their main task, that is, checking for errors. But according to many users, the best of them is memtest86+.

This program provides the most accurate data and can work on a wide variety of operating systems, including Windows 7, 10, Vista, and so on.

You can download memtest86+ very quickly online. The entire process of using this program from start to finish is as follows:

  • Download memtest86+ from the official website. The link is as follows: www.memtest.org/#downiso. There we will have several download options available:
    • in .gz format for the Linux operating system and similar ones (in Figure No. 5 it is underlined with a red line);
    • in .zip format in order to then burn the image to a regular CD or DVD disc(underlined with a green line);
    • in .exe format for writing to a flash drive (blue line).

  • After this, you will need to write the downloaded image to a USB flash drive or to the most regular disk so that later, when the system starts, these files can be launched.
Everything is very simple here - if you downloaded the .zip, then standard means write the file to disk, if .exe, then dump it onto a flash drive, deleting everything else from it. And if you downloaded .gz, then we just launch it.
  • After recording, you need to set the BIOS to boot from the recording media. To do this, you need to make sure that the system checks when starting up to see if there is anything in the drives and connectors.
For this to happen, we restart the computer and when it starts, press the Delete button (on some computers F2). This will take us to the BIOS.
There we look for an item whose name includes the word “Boot” (for example, in Award BIOS it is called “Advanced BIOS Features” - shown in Figure No. 6).

There we look for the “Boot Sequence” item (again, the name may change depending on the version).

In the window that appears, we see a list of all available media from which downloading can occur. The name of the flash drive will include “USB”, and the name of the disk will appear “CD/DVD”.

We need to click on the first item, that is, “1st Boot Device» and select the desired drive in the window that appears. In the example given, this is a flash drive, that is, a USB drive.

  • Insert the media with the program. It will start automatically. The program window looks as shown in Figure 10.

Advice: It is better to check each RAM module separately. This means that you need to physically (by hand) remove each memory module in turn and run the test. In this case, the utilitymemtest86+will find the module that is damaged. It's better to just throw away the problematic memory module and replace it with a new one.

If problems are detected, the memtest86+ window will look like shown in Figure 11.

Unfortunately, memtest86+ does not work in Russian. But it can be easily and quickly downloaded online.

And here the main thing is to find problems, and if there are any, we will see red, as shown in Figure No. 11.

More details about how memtest86+ works can be found in the video below.

If you need to find out how much random access memory (RAM) is installed on your computer or laptop, and also get additional information about it: the current frequency, the number of occupied RAM slots, type, model or voltage - this can be done both with the built-in tools of the system and with the help of third-party free programs (in the latter case you can get more detailed information).

This manual contains details about various methods determine how many GB of RAM are installed on a PC or laptop, as well as some additional information, which may be useful. If you are interested in how to find out how much memory your computer supports, I touched on this topic in a separate article: How to increase the RAM of a laptop (also relevant for desktop computers). Also useful: Is it possible to install RAM of different sizes, frequencies, voltages.

  • How to find out how many GB of RAM is on your computer using Windows
  • Determining the amount of RAM using third-party programs
  • View information about installed memory in BIOS/UEFI
  • Video instructions

Windows 10, 8.1, and Windows 7 provide simple utilities to view your computer's settings, including hardware specifications related to the amount of RAM. First about the method for everyone latest versions OS and then a separate method for Windows 10.

More detailed information regarding the hardware characteristics of the installed RAM is not available here. But often this information is enough for a novice user.

If you have Windows 10 installed, then you can use the following method and get more detailed information about the installed RAM memory:

Keep in mind that information about the number of used slots may be incorrect (especially for laptops): sometimes, if there are only 2 RAM slots, the system “sees” 4.

Third-party programs for determining the amount of memory and other characteristics of a computer are good because they allow you to obtain more detailed information about various parameters RAM. There are many various programs viewing the characteristics of the computer, but in the context of this article I would recommend using the free CPU-Z, which can be downloaded as an installer or portable version in a ZIP archive from the official website https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z .html

After starting the program, go to the “Memory” tab. Here in the “General” section you will see basic information about the installed memory (I specifically do not touch on some parameters, as they are unnecessary in the context of the article):

  • Type - memory type.
  • Size - the total size of the RAM.
  • Channel - in which mode the memory operates. Typically: Single (single-channel) or Dual (two-channel).
  • NB Frequency - the current frequency of the memory controller (not the same as the memory frequency and not really for beginners). Sometimes the item may not be active (on older systems) and may not display information.

You can see the current memory frequency in the Timings - DRAM Frequency section. It may “jump” and be half the stated frequency in the specifications of your RAM module - this is normal (we get the frequency twice as high due to the dual-channel mode, but this field will still display the actual frequency), a small a smaller difference from “round” numbers is also normal and depends mostly on the processor of the computer or laptop.

Separately, on the SPD tab in CPU-Z, by selecting a specific slot at the top left, you can get information about the characteristics of each installed memory module: from the main (for beginners) - type, maximum frequency, manufacturer, memory module model (in the Part Number section), memory module size, voltage (below, in the table in the Voltage item).

There are other programs that provide equally detailed information. One of the popular, but not completely free, is AIDA64.

Information about the installed RAM can also be found in the BIOS (UEFI) of your PC or laptop (see How to enter BIOS/UEFI in Windows 10).

In BIOS from different manufacturers and different versions this information is located in various locations: sometimes on home page(Main), sometimes in separate sections like System Information or RAM (DRAM) Configuration. On a PC, these sections usually contain information about the amount of installed memory, frequency and voltage (as well as additional information and settings).

And a simple video that clearly shows the first two ways to find out how much RAM is installed on your system.

I hope the instructions were useful. If anything is not completely clear, I look forward to your comments.

Some users are wondering how to find out how much RAM is on a computer in order to upgrade their PC: increase the total amount of memory. First, you need to find out what RAM is on the device in order to have an idea of the characteristics of the RAM (random access memory) of the computer.

Random Access Memory (RAM) is an important component of computer hardware that affects the performance of the device. For comfortable work, the computer must have sufficient RAM. If there is not enough RAM on your PC, memory needs to be added or replaced.

To upgrade your computer hardware, in particular increasing the size of RAM, you will need to find out general characteristics RAM installed on your device. You need to find out the following parameters: what is the amount of RAM, how many RAM slots are there, what is the frequency of RAM and some others technical specifications(timings, etc.).

First you need to find out how much RAM is on your computer at a given time. The rest of the memory selection actions depend on this information.

Often users add additional memory sticks (modules), if possible, to increase the amount of RAM. Therefore, you first need to find out the number of RAM slots on the computer and whether there are free slots (connectors, sockets).

Additional memory modules can be inserted into the free slots. Otherwise, you will have to replace smaller memory sticks with larger memory modules.

For example, if your PC has two 2 GB memory sticks running in two-channel mode, and the user wants to increase the total amount of RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB, then he has great value availability of free slots (connectors) for installing RAM modules.

If there are no free slots on the computer, then the user will have to replace the installed memory modules with two 4 GB sticks, which will operate in dual-channel mode, or with one 8 GB module, operating in single-channel mode. It is advisable to use memory in dual-channel mode, this is a more productive way of working.

Conclusions of the article

If necessary, the user can change memory modules on his computer, or increase the amount of RAM by adding new RAM memory sticks. You first need to find out how much memory is currently available on the computer, and what kind of RAM is currently installed on the PC in order to select suitable RAM modules.

An indispensable computer component is RAM. It is present in absolutely every device, allowing it to function correctly. Since RAM can be from different manufacturers and has certain technical characteristics, some users need to find out these parameters by accessible means. As part of today's material, we want to demonstrate the implementation of this goal in the Windows 7 operating system, analyzing absolutely everything important nuances this computer component.

The main indicator that interests the vast majority of users is the amount of RAM. The number of available megabytes determines how many processes the computer can process simultaneously, since machine code is often temporarily stored in RAM and is gradually processed by other components. Now for correct functioning modern games sometimes even 8 GB of storage is not enough, not to mention working with complex professional programs. However, the question of RAM volume is almost always of interest to novice users. Especially for them, we have prepared as many as six available methods for solving this, which are presented below.

Method 1: AIDA64

We suggest starting with using third-party tools from independent developers, which, in addition to volume, are able to demonstrate other technical characteristics of the installed component. First of all, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the AIDA64 program. It is known to almost everyone, but it is paid, and trial version necessary information is hidden. If you do not want to purchase this software, immediately proceed to the next method, and for those who already own or are planning to buy AIDA, we advise you to study these instructions.

As you can see, AIDA64 is very easy to use, but its main drawback is that it is paid. If you are not ready to pay for this software, consider the following two options, which also use third-party software that is distributed free of charge.

Method 2: Speccy

Many active operating room users Windows systems Have you heard at least once about such software as . Its main function is to clean the system of debris. The developers of this application have created another tool that allows you to monitor the components installed in your PC, including RAM. This process looks like this:

  1. After installing Speccy, run it and wait for the system scan to complete. This may take several minutes, depending on the speed of your PC.
  2. The main window immediately displays the amount of installed RAM in the line "RAM".
  3. If you want more information, take a look at the left panel. Select a category here "RAM" by clicking on it with the left mouse button.
  4. Expand present lists to get absolutely all the data, including the type of RAM, the number of sticks, the total load and the amount of virtual memory.
  5. Now you can study all these technical characteristics.

Speccy is distributed free of charge, so after use, leave this software on your computer in case you need to quickly find out some parameter of the built-in component or connected peripheral again. As you can see, this software displays absolutely all basic and additional information.

Method 3: System Spec

If none of the above methods suits you, but you still want to use third-party software to solve the problem, we recommend that you pay attention to System Spec. This free program, practically no different from those mentioned above, but with one small defect - some names in Cyrillic or in a certain encoding are displayed as hieroglyphs.

Now on the Internet it is not difficult to find a program similar to the ones we talked about above. Therefore, if none of them suits you for any reason, read short reviews for all popular solutions for identifying computer hardware at the following link.

Method 4: Task Manager Menu

Now let's move on to methods that allow you to find out the information you are interested in today without downloading third-party applications. The first is to use the well-known menu "Task Manager". In addition to the list with current processes, there is also separate tab, which allows you to monitor system resources, including viewing the amount of RAM.

  1. Launch menu "Task Manager" using a method convenient for you, for example, by right-clicking on the taskbar and selecting "Start Task Manager". You can find alternative options for opening this window in our article below.
  2. Please note the table below. The physical memory load is immediately displayed here as a percentage, but this is not exactly what we need now.
  3. Move to the tab "Performance" and look at the graph "Memory". The chronology and total RAM load are shown here.
  4. A little lower in the section « Physical memory» its total quantity, available and cached volume are shown.
  5. Click on "Resource Monitor", if you want to view RAM usage in real time.
  6. A window called "Resource Monitor". Here on the tab "Memory" shows how each process loads RAM, for how long and how much memory it consumed in total. Below is a general graph of RAM and its entire existing amount.

As you can see, the potential "Task Manager" much higher than novice users might imagine. It contains a lot of useful information, and in Windows 10 this component has been further improved. However, not all users want to use this particular option for viewing RAM. In such situations, we recommend turning to the two final methods presented below.
