Microsoft uses authentication to identify pirated copies of Windows. Authentication is installed with operating system updates. You may not even notice it, and one day you will see the inscription “Your copy of Windows is not genuine.” There is one way to disable authentication.

Hello dear readers. Do you know how to properly activate licensed Windows? Say what you know, hmm, I thought so too, but somehow I came across a laptop on which, after installing the new Windows 8, I was going to activate it using the key, but to my surprise I couldn’t do it. To be more precise, after clicking on the “Activate Windows” button, instead of a request to enter a key, strange errors appeared, such as this: “DNS name not specified.”

Over time, of course, I figured out what was going on, it turned out that during the installation of the system some strange key was picked up, which at the time of activation was simply not recognized by the system. This problem could only be resolved by deleting the old activation key, and of course, installing the working key that came with the laptop. Therefore, I decided to write an article using my personal example of how I managed to remove the old activation key and activate Windows from scratch.

So, I had a laptop with a pre-installed operating system and, of course, a key that was embedded in the BIOS. and I configured it using the . Then, I opened the computer properties and immediately clicked on the “ Activate Windows».

The activation process began immediately, I was even surprised why the system didn’t even prompt me to enter the key. Well, okay, I thought, perhaps the computer automatically supplied the required activation key. But literally a moment later an error appeared, which I wrote about just above. All subsequent attempts to activate Windows were unchanged, except that the error code changed.

Well, I thought and tried to find a field in which I could indicate the key that I got from the BIOS, but instead some incomprehensible key was already indicated everywhere. I could only see a few characters, but this was enough to understand that this code did not match what I had prepared. Thinking that there was some kind of confusion with the activation keys, I decided to delete the old key and re-enter the new one.

In general, after I deleted the old activation key and re-entered the one I prepared, everything worked out for me. First I saw the word “Success!!!”, and then that Windows activation was completed.

Removing the old activation key

To remove the old activation key in Windows 8, as with many other system settings, we will need the command line, or rather, there we will just have to run a few commands.

How to remove an old activation key in Windows 8, 7, 10

- a fairly simple and understandable procedure (well, at least more or less) than what we are going to consider later in this article. What if you want to do something more advanced and complex with the license, for example, things like how to remove/change a product key, perform online activation or extend the activation time. It's not as simple as simple activation, which is performed using standard OS tools with a convenient graphical interface, but it's not that complicated either. In this article I will give you information on how and with what help this can be done.

There is a command line tool called Slmgr.vbs that comes with Windows that provides capabilities not available in the standard activation interface, which is located in the Update and Security window, accessible by opening the Start menu and selecting Settings.

First: Open a command prompt with administrator rights

This is required to use Slmgr.vbs. In Windows 10 or 8, right-click the Start button (or Win + X) and select Command Prompt (Admin). In Windows 7, find Command Prompt in the Start menu, under All Programs > System Tools. Right-click on it and select “Run as administrator.”

View activation/license information

To display basic license and activation information, run the command below, which will tell you what version of Windows you have, part of the product key for you to identify, and will show you whether the system is activated.

With Slmgr.vbs you can also remove the product key of your current Windows system. After running the command below, restart your computer and your operating system will not have a product key, which means Windows will become inactive - without a license.

Using slmgr.vbs you can enter a new product key. If the Windows system is already activated, using the command below you can replace the old key with a new valid one (instead of #####-#####-#####-#####-##### enter the new one key). After this, it is recommended to restart your computer.

Now you need to receive a system activation confirmation code by phone. Go to the official Microsoft Windows Activation Help page. Following the instructions given, call the Microsoft Product Activation Center (there is nothing wrong with that, you will follow the instructions of the robot) and provide the installation ID received above and you will receive an activation code (if everything is confirmed successfully). This may help you activate Windows without an Internet connection.

Instead of ACTIVATIONID, enter the activation ID. which you received:

How to extend activation

Take Windows 7 for example, which has a 30-day trial period before it starts asking you for a product key. You can extend the trial period, i.e. reset this trial period back to 30 days by running the command below.

However, you will not be able to extend the trial period over and over again and indefinitely - the command can only be used a few times. If you want to know how many times, enter the command slmgr.vbs /dlv. I don’t remember exactly, but for each version, it seems, there is a different “number of times”. In Windows 7, if I'm not mistaken, 3 times, and 5 times on Windows Server 2008 R2. With the exception of Windows 10, the option works in all earlier versions.

Using Slmgr.vbs for remote computers

Slmgr typically runs on the current computer, but you have the ability to remotely administer computers on your network if you have access to them. For example, the first command below applies to the current computer, and the second applies to the remote computer. You just need to know the Computer name, username and password.

After installing Windows 7 on your computer, you can use it for free for a while. According to the terms of the agreement, this period is 30 days. Legal activation of Windows 7

Activating Windows 7 by phone

If you have a choice, this option is preferable. With its help, you can activate a boxed or OEM version of Windows 7 of any edition: from starter to ultimate. This way you will receive all the necessary keys that will help you legally activate the system in case of reinstallation. With automatic activation via the network, all data exchange occurs hidden - the key is not communicated to the user.

• From the list of activation options, select “Show other methods.”

• Click “Use an automated telephone system.”

• Enter the Windows 7 product key. It is written on the box or envelope with the installation disk if you have a boxed version of the system. Don’t get confused, the “maximum” edition key will not fit the “home”, “pro” or “starter” versions, and vice versa. Therefore, use only the correct key.

• Next, select your location.

• Switch the phone to tone mode. At the request of the robot (the automatic telephone system works without live operators), you need to dial the numbers on your phone that are indicated in the “Step 2” section and then enter the code received from the robot in the “Step 3” section. Next, click “Next” and wait for the activation success message.

Activating Windows 7 via the Internet

Automatic activation over the network is the fastest and easiest option, requiring a minimum of user actions. If you have a license key, you can activate the system in this way already at the installation stage. Suitable for any edition of Windows 7: Ultimate, Professional, Both Home and Basic.

• Select “Activate Windows over the network” from the list.

• Enter your product key (in the same way as for telephone activation). It may take some time for the key to be verified.

• If the key fails verification, make sure you haven't mixed it up. So, the key for Windows 7 maximum, as in the case of activation by phone, will not work with home and vice versa.

• If the key is correct, you will see a message indicating that the activation was successful.

In addition to the option with a permanent Internet connection, there is an activation method using a modem connection. It may be convenient for you if you have a modem.

Pirate activation of Windows 7

A great variety of “pseudo-activators” for Windows 7 have been released. In one way or another, they bypass or block the Windows Activation Technologies system - that which is responsible for legal activation and, after the end of the trial period, blocks the operation of Windows. “Pseudo-activators” either “deceive” the counter of the remaining days of the trial, forcing the system to “think” that 30 free days have not yet passed, or force it to accept a fake activation key, or modify part of the system files so that the lack of activation ceases to affect the operation of Windows at all .

Most pirated activators are as simple as possible to use and work on the principle of launching, pressing a button and you’re done. There are universal activators that work on all editions of Windows 7 and highly specialized ones, for example, only for Windows Ultimate or Pro.

Here are some of the methods of illegal activation that exist today:

• modification of the SLIC table in the computer BIOS, where information about system and program licensing is stored;
• emulation of an SLIC table at an early stage of PC boot, which is “slipped” to the system instead of the original one;
• using KMS services (key management services) in two versions: online - to activate professional and corporate editions of Windows 7 and offline (via KMS virtualization), with which the maximum and home editions can be activated.

Download the activator Windows 7 Loader 2.2 follow one of the active links, unpack and launch it. This utility is intended for all editions of Windows 7: maximum, professional, etc., both 32 and 64-bit versions. In our example, we use Windows Ultimate.

You must disable it before starting. You must run the file as an administrator.

In the activator window, just click the “Install” button, the program will do the rest itself, including restarting the computer. Deactivating or removing activation information from the system may be necessary when you are going to restore the computer to its factory state, for example, before selling it, so that the buyer has the opportunity to activate the system with his own key. And your key will remain with you and can be used on another machine.

The method works on any boxed edition of Windows 7 (ultimate, professional, etc.). It is not suitable for OEM versions, since in them the system is physically “tied” to the PC motherboard.
