How to number pages in Word. How to set page numbers in Word. How to make page numbers in Word How to put page numbers in Word

We often work with texts in Microsoft Word. For better navigation in the document, you need to make page numbers. Not everyone knows how to number pages in Word, so let’s consider this issue.

How to make page numbers in Word 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016

To set page numbering in Word, open the “Insert” menu - “Page Number”.

Versions of Word 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016 do this the same way.

Choose the numbering position: top or bottom of the page, and then the style: left, center, or right.

Word will automatically number the entire document.

Then double-click outside the header and footer area or click the "Close Header and Footer Window" button.

Removing a number from the first page of a document

If you don't want to put a number on the first page, then go to the "Insert" menu and select "Footer" - "Change Footer" or "Header" - "Change Header", depending on where you have the number .

The tab “Working with headers and footers” - “Design” will open. Click on “Special first page footer” in the options.

In the Header and Footer area, highlight and delete the page number. Click "Close Header and Footer Window" or ESC button.

How to put numbering not from the beginning of the document

To start numbering not from the first sheet of the document, you need to break it into sections, disconnect the connection between them and add numbers.

Go to the part of the document where you want to start numbering and insert a section break. To do this, on the “Page Layout” menu tab, select the “Breaks” - “Next Page” command.

Double-click on the top or bottom of the page where you need to put the numbers. The menu “Working with Headers and Footers” - “Design” will open. Click on “Same as in previous section” to remove the connection of the header and footer with the previous section of the document.

The header and footer are linked separately. If the numbering is at the top of the document, unlink the headers; if the numbers are at the bottom, unlink the footers.

Then set the numbering: “Insert” - “Page Number” and select the desired layout.

Go back to Page Number - Page Number Format.

In the next window, next to “start with”, write 1 so that the numbering starts from 1 and click “OK”. Otherwise, Word will accept the actual number.

How to start pagination with a number other than 1

In the “Page Number Format” window (picture above), you can set a different initial numbering.

Double-click in the header or footer area. The “Working with Headers and Footers” tab is activated. Go to the "Insert" - "Page Number" tab and select the appropriate style.

In the new window, in the “Page Numbering” section next to “start with”, write the number you need and click “OK”.

When creating and editing text in the Microsoft Word editor, a new page is added automatically if there is not enough space on the current one. But sometimes you need to move to a new sheet without completely filling out the previous one. The editor has several tools for this. This article will tell you how to add pages to Word using them.

Method #1: Inserting a Page Break

The peculiarity of this technique is that all the text coming after the cursor is shifted along with it to a new sheet. It is often used to complete sections and chapters in large documents. Coursework or diploma papers, for example.

In Word 2003, inserting a break is done as follows:

  • In the main menu bar, select the sections in sequence: “Insert”, “Break”.
  • In a new small window, check the box next to “New Page”.

In Word 2007 and later versions, you can insert a break in 2 ways. The first method: go to the “Insert” tab and click on the third button on the left inside the “Pages” block (“Page Break”).

To insert a page using the second method, you need to:

  • Go to the “Page Layout” section.
  • Click on “Breaks” in the “Page Options” block (second from left).
  • Select “Page” from the menu that opens.

In addition to these methods, there is a universal hotkey combination “Ctrl+Enter”. It allows you to quickly add pages in Word, as is often required.

Method number 2: inserting a blank sheet.

This technique allows you to add a new page to a document. It is inserted after the cursor. If there was any text after it, then it will be on the next sheet after the new one.

The way to add a page in Word versions 2007-2016 is as follows:

  • Go to the “Insert” tab.
  • LMB on the “Blank Page” button in the “Pages” block.

After insertion, the cursor is automatically positioned at the beginning of the first line of the new sheet.

Method number 3: new section

To insert a new sheet into a document in Word 2003 using this method, you need to open the Break window using the Insert menu. In the second subblock, a mark is placed near the line “from the next page”. Then you need to click on “OK”.

Before adding a new page in Word 2007 and newer versions, you need to perform the following sequence of actions:

  • Follow steps No. 1 and 2 from the second method.
  • In the menu that opens, click on the “Next Page” button in the “Section Breaks” subsection.

It is better to use this method only if the new page will use a text design that differs from the main one: columns, a different layout of the sheet, a different font or numbering. For other cases, the first 2 steps are more suitable.

How to add page numbers in Word

In addition to adding new pages using breaks, page numbering is often required for design. To perform this operation in the 2003 editor, you need:

  • Open the “Page Numbers” window using the command of the same name located in the “Insert” menu.
  • In the dialog box that opens, select the position of the future number: top or bottom, left, center or right.

Inserting page numbers in Word 2007-2016 is done according to the following algorithm:

  • In the “Header and Footer” block (the “Insert” tab), click on “Page Number”.
  • Using the first four points, select its position on the sheet.

Start numbering from any number

Sometimes you need to start numbering sheets not from the number 1, but from 3 or 50. For this, in the operation in “Word” there is a setting called “Page Format”. To use it in the 2003 version of the editor, you need:

  • Open the “Page Numbers” window.
  • In it, click on the “Format...” button.
  • In the next box, check the box next to “Start with...” and enter the required number in the field.

To use this same function in Word 2007 you need:

  • Click on the “Page Number” button located in the “Header and Footers” block.
  • In the drop-down menu, select the “Page Number Format” sub-item.
  • Complete step 3 from the previous method.

This is the way to add numbers to pages in Word.

Numbering starts from the second sheet of the document

According to the rules of registration, there should not be a number on the title page of the document, if there is one. There is a small tool in the editor for this requirement as well. To use it in Word 2003, you need:

  • Call up the “Page Numbers” window.
  • Uncheck the box next to “Number on the first page”.

But in the 2007 version this is made a little more complicated. To remove a number from the first sheet, you will have to:

  • Double-click the left mouse button on the page number or click one of the “Header / Footer” buttons and select the “Change Header” sub-item.

Thanks to the simple and intuitive interface, any user of the Microsoft Word editor can handle inserting a new page or numbering it.

Page numbering in Word for a regular document is done very simply, but when the need arises to put page numbers in your own headers or footers or double page numbering, then some people begin to feel sad.

There's really nothing complicated. I suggest doing a little practical work, after which your work will become more fun and easier.

Simple pagination

First, a few words about how to number pages in Word for those who are encountering this for the first time:

In the top menu ribbon we go Insert → Page Number → Top of Page → Prime Number 1

Of course, you can choose absolutely any arrangement and style of page numbering; my choice is due to the compactness of the drawing. That's all, let's move on to get acquainted with more interesting things.

Page numbers in footers

The fact is that page numbers in Word are inserted into the headers and footers, and if you have your own, the previous method will not work, because Everything in the document will be awry.

Healthy. If you are familiar with the concepts of headers and footers in Word, then I strongly recommend that you read the articles: “Headers and Footers in Word” (see) and “Sections in Word” (see).

How to number pages in Word

So, let's get started and do everything in order:

1. Download the prepared file for practical work.

2. Go to the editing mode of the header of the first page of content (if you have difficulty, see).

3. Place the cursor in the rectangle in the upper right corner and press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+F9, after which it will appear { } .

4. Write or copy the code in these brackets PAGE .

5. Press the keyboard shortcut Alt+F9, this will display the meaning of the code.

6. Exit the header-footer editing mode (if you find it difficult, see).

7. Since, in our example, there is a special footer for the first page, it is necessary to do this for subsequent content pages. Go to the second page and do it.

8. Numbering has been set, but as a rule it does not start from the first page. Go to the first page header editing mode and highlight the page number by going to the top menu ribbon Insert → Page Number → Page Number Format… and specify that page numbering should start at 4.

Thus, continuous numbering is provided for subsequent sections of the explanatory note and appendices. For simplicity, you can copy the page number of the contents, in the header-footer editing mode, and paste it into subsequent sections.

Double pagination in Word

So, we have sorted out the continuous numbering of pages in Word, but it is also necessary to put the sheet numbers of each section separately for the contents, notes and appendices.

Let's continue step by step, from simple to complex:

9. Go to the footer editing mode of the second page of contents and place the cursor in the lower right corner in the appropriate place.

10. Paste the code into this cell (=(page)-3) similarly, creating curly braces with a keyboard shortcut Ctrl+F9. Page number 2 was obtained by decreasing the value of the current page by 3, as can be seen from the code.

You can check the result by adding a contents page.

Page numbering in Word for the pros

The previous method can also be used to number subsequent internal pages of sections, but the problem is that you will constantly have to monitor the number of the last page of the previous section. Damn, I could probably rest here, my head is starting to get warm.

Let's do this, if in this example you have the second page of section explanatory note 7, then you will have to get the internal numbering of the second page like this (=(page)-5), if the number of pages of content increases by one, then the number of the second page of the note will be 8, and the internal one will have to be written as (=(page)-6) .

We can automate this too, we do it sequentially, and everything will become clear along the way:

11. Turn on the visibility of hidden characters by clicking the corresponding button on the main tab of the top menu, and select the entire line

::::::::Section break (from next page):::::::::

This inscription must be on a separate line, otherwise move it with the cursor at the beginning and press Enter. To select, move the cursor from the beginning to the end of the points, or click opposite the line outside the sheet space.

12. With a line highlighted in the top menu Insert → Bookmark in the “Bookmark” window we write r1(analogous to section 1, in Latin letters without spaces), set “Hidden bookmarks” and click “Add”.

13. Go to edit the footer of the second page of the explanatory note and insert the code into the page number cell (=(page)-(pageRef r1) .

It should be interpreted as follows: code (page) indicates the page number, in our case 7, and (pageRef r1) the cross-reference page number created at the section break, which is on page 5, so the internal page number is calculated as the page number minus the last page number of the previous section, i.e. 7-5=2; 8-5=3; 9-5=4, etc.

14. Do the same for the applications section yourself by adding a bookmark r2 to break the section at the end of the explanatory note.

The final touch to page numbering

Go sequentially to the first page of each section, and in the cell under the inscription “Sheets” in the lower right corner, put the code (SectionPages). This code will display the total number of pages in the section. If you need to display the total number of pages in the document, insert the code (NUMPAGES) .

It happens that word slows down and does not always update fields with codes; to force updating, press the key combination twice Alt+F9.

Let me remind you that parentheses for inserting code are called by the combination Crtl+F9, and calling the values Alt+F9.

Bonus. Well, in the end, if there were any difficulties, you can download the document with the finished result by clicking.

Page numbering in word. Video tutorial

Will definitely be there as soon as time comes...

In the process of writing an essay, diploma or book, we all use the text editor for Microsoft Word documents. Proper formatting should generally include page numbering within the document. Many people have difficulties and do not know how to number pages in Word, although it is quite simple to do.

This article describes in detail how to number pages in Word, choose the numbering location, format, and also exclude numbering of any document page.

Page numbering in Word 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016

In all versions older than Word 2003, numbering is the same. The screenshots below are based on Word 2017, but they will also work for older versions.

To add numbering in an open document, go to the “Insert” tab. In the “Header and Footer” section, click “Page Number” and select a numbering position. In the screenshot below, I have chosen the footer location with centered placement.

After this action, numbering will appear at the end of each page, as well as displaying a header and footer. To close the display of headers and footers, click the “Close Header and Footers Window” button.

If desired, you can change the numbering format, for example, by making the numbers not Arabic, but Roman. To do this, again go to the “Insert” tab and in the “Page Numbers” item open “Page Number Format”.

Here you can choose the appearance, as well as which number the numbering will begin with. Why this may be required you will find out in the next paragraph.

Removing numbering from the title page

In most educational institutions, one of the requirements for document formatting is the absence of numbering on the title (first) page. If you simply enable page numbering, as shown above, then the numbering will be on the first sheet. To start numbering from the first page, but not display it on the title page, you must do the following.

Go to the “Layout” tab and click on the “Page Setup” link, as shown in the picture below.

Go to the “Paper Sources” tab and check the “Distinguish between first page headers and footers” checkbox. After that, click OK.

Now numbering is carried out as before, but its number is not displayed on the first page, in our case number 1.

When you want the numbering not to be displayed on the first page (title page), but on the second so that it starts with the number 1, you need to set the numbering from 0 in the menu “Insert” - “Page Number” - “Page Number Format”. the first page will start with number 0 without display, and the second page will start with number 1, the third page with number 2 and so on.

Numbering from the third page

Let's complicate the task a little. We need the numbering to be present, but not displayed on the first and second pages. After all, the first page is usually the title page, the second can be a table of contents, where numbering is also not required.

To number from the third page you will need to do an operation called “Page Break”. First, return all numbering settings to default if you have hidden the numbering display on the cover page. Let's assume that you currently have numbering enabled from the first page and the number 1 is displayed on the title page, the number 2 on the second page, and so on.

For convenience, turn on the display of all characters in Word. To do this, on the “Home” tab, click on the “Display all signs” button.

Now that you have all the characters in your documents displayed, including spaces and empty lines, left-click on the last character on the first page of the document. Then on the “Layout” tab, click “Breaks” - “Next Page”.

Do the same steps with the second page of the document. If you did everything correctly, then the enabled display of all characters function will show you break lines at the end of the first and second pages. In the picture below they are shown with red arrows.

Now the third page is numbered 1. If you want it to be numbered 3, then in the menu “Insert” - “Page Number” - “Page Number Format” set the value to “Start from 3”.

There is only one problem left, on the first two pages we have page numbers displayed. To remove them, select the first page, go to the “Layout” tab - “Page Options”. Next, in the “Paper Source” tab, check the box next to “Distinguish between first page headers and footers.”

Do the same on the next page of your document.

Thus, we were able to make sure that the numbering on the first two pages was not displayed and started from the third, and from the number we wanted.

By the way, this method with a break allows you to start numbering not only from the third page, but from absolutely any one.

To remove numbering, double-click on any page number and press the DEL key. All numbers will be removed from the document.

Page numbering in Word 2003

There are still quite a few people who use the outdated Word 2003. In it, page numbering is done in a slightly different order than for newer versions of the program.

In the open Word 2003 file, click on the top menu “Insert” - “Page Numbers”.

Set the position of the numbers (for example, at the bottom of the page) and alignment (for example, to the right). By unchecking the “Number on the first page” item, you can disable numbering on the title page of the document.

Click on the "Format" button. Specify the numbering format (for example, Roman numerals), and also specify which digit to start page numbering with.

After making changes, click OK and all pages will become numbered.

To number from the third or any other page in Word 2003, first turn on the display of all characters. After that, move the cursor to the last character on the first page and click “Insert” - “Page Break” in the horizontal menu. Do the same on the second one. From now on, numbering will start from the third page.

MS Word is the most convenient and widespread text editor. Millions of users create various documents in it, ranging from business letters to fundamental scientific research.

For user convenience, the program provides a number of additional formatting options, including page numbering. This function is available in all versions of Microsoft Word and is very useful when writing large papers.

Using the page number you can quickly find the information you need, and in a printed document you can easily arrange all the pages in order without fear of them getting mixed up. As an example, let's try to set page numbering in Word 2007.

Quick navigation through the article

Enable pagination

To activate page numbering in Word 2007, you must do the following:

  • Open the required document;
  • On the toolbar, select the “Insert” tab. Page numbering refers to the “Header and Footer” section (that is, page design elements that are placed behind the fields and are filled in mostly automatically);
  • In the “Header and Footer” section, click on the “Page Number” button;
  • In the drop-down menu, the program will offer different ways to position the number: at the top of the page, at the bottom or in the margins. In addition, it can occupy a place in the right or left corner, or be in the center;
  • After the choice of the location of the numbers is made, headers and footers with page numbers will appear in the document.

Numbering adjustment

When writing abstracts, as well as scientific and research papers, the first 1-2 pages are called title pages - they are taken into account in the scope of the work, but are not numbered. In this case, it is necessary to enter the numbers not from the beginning, but from a certain number. This is done as follows:

  • In the “Page Number” drop-down menu, click “Page Number Format”;
  • In the dialog box that opens, in the “start from:” item, enter the appropriate value (for example, 2, if you need to start from the second page) and click “OK”.

In order to remove a number from the title page, you will need to perform the following steps:

  • Go to the “Page Layout” menu;
  • In the “Page Settings” section, open the dialog box by clicking on the arrow at the bottom of the panel;
  • Go to the “Paper Source” tab;
  • Check the box next to “Differentiate headers and footers on the first page” and click “OK”.

Types of numbering

Most often, in documents and student works, a standard Arabic numeral is used to indicate the serial number of the page. In the Word 2007 text editor, it is possible to select an unusual format (for example, Roman numerals, Latin small or Latin capital letters, as well as Arabic numbering with dashes).
