The film preparation procedure is as follows:

Take measurements from the display and transfer them to the film using a ruler. You can safely draw the contours with a marker, since the film is covered on both sides with protective films, there will be no marks left.
Place the film on the mat, apply a ruler to straight contours and moderate pressure, with a clear movement of the scalpel/blade, make cuts. It is not recommended to use scissors for this (there will be burrs that will prevent the edges from sticking tightly).
If there are curly outlines that need to be trimmed, use the curly arc of a protractor to trim them.

After this, the film is ready for gluing. If the phone has contours that require a shaped cut (for example, Samsung, with an oval home button), but you don’t want to do them, you can simply cut the film straight so that it covers the display itself, but does not reach the keys under the screen.

There are two ways to stick the film on your phone without bubbles: “dry” and “wet”. The first of them is fast and safe, but requires more skill. It also requires clean conditions without dust in the air. The “wet” method is fast, but can pose a threat to the smartphone in inexperienced hands.

Dry method

The dry method is most often used for gluing film. It is the one that is recommended, but is associated with certain difficulties. In any case, there are a number of situations for which these materials are not prepared. The way out of this situation is to use a protective film. It allows you to avoid damage to the touch surface under the influence of foreign objects, protects the coating from dirt and light falls, since even a thin layer of polymer is shock-absorbing.

As a rule, specialized films designed for a specific device model include all the necessary tools (napkin, plastic card for smoothing). The situation is a little more complicated with universal ones. Firstly, they are often supplied “pure”, without additional packaging or accessories. Secondly, you often have to adjust the shape to the size of your device.

How to cut universal screen film?

Do not cut the universal film for the smartphone screen with scissors. Even the best of them may have a loose fit between the halves, which can cause burrs and deformations of the product. A very sharp knife or razor (not a razor) is best. Also, for cutting you will need a ruler made of durable material, or better yet, a corner.

The last point can also be done on a universal protective film, but only if the device display is made of durable glass, and the razor or knife is made of steel. And do this at your own peril and risk. After all, as you know, it is impossible to scratch glass with steel, but cutting plastic is as easy as shelling pears.

Let's start gluing

Requireded tools and materials:

protective film;
a cloth that does not leave streaks or fibers on the surface (microfiber);
a thin plastic object (for example, a bank card).

To properly apply the protective film, it is advisable to carry out manipulations in a clean room where there is no dust. Otherwise it will turn out like this

Procedure

Clean your smartphone's touch screen thoroughly. Remove all traces of fingerprints, smears, and dirt. It is advisable not to hold it with your hands, but to place it on the table.
Prepare all tools and materials.
Take the film and start peeling off the protective layer of polyethylene glued on the sticky side.
Having previously “aimed”, apply the free end of the film to the smartphone screen. Make sure that all the holes are in place - sensor eyes, cameras, buttons, speaker, etc.
Using a thin object (such as a credit card), smooth out the applied area to avoid any bubbles.
Continue removing the protective coating while pressing and smoothing the film.
If air bubbles appear, stop and slightly pull the free end of the screen film up to the point where the bubble appears. After this, re-apply it to this area and smooth it out thoroughly.
Follow steps 6 – 7 until gluing is complete.
Finally smooth out the film and remove the top protective covering (not all types are equipped with it; usually products with double protection have 2 “tabs”, which indicate which one to remove first (bottom) and which one to remove second).

Alternative ways to stick film

There are other ways to apply a universal protective film to the screen. For example, some craftsmen use a “liquid” option (similar to the method used when tinting car windows). In this case, a thin layer of water is first applied to the screen. But there are several nuances here.

Electronics are afraid of moisture. Water ingress can damage the smartphone, so this method is contraindicated for inexperienced users.
Displays equipped with an oleophobic coating are difficult to “tint” in this way (the water will not cover it with a layer, but will “grab” in drops). However, for such screens, the use of film generally makes little sense.

In general, the method differs little from that described above. Its only advantage is that the water wets and pushes out small dust particles that can cause air bubbles.

A way to stick film on a small screen

You can glue the film onto small screens (up to 4") more quickly by immediately removing all the protection from the adhesive side.

The procedure for gluing the film

Clean the screen from dust, dirt and fingerprints.
Remove the protection from the bottom layer of the universal film. After that, hold it by the edges without touching the adhesive side!
Place it on the screen with the central part, having previously centered it so that all the holes are in their places and lie flat.
Smooth the film from the center to the edges.
When bubbles appear, carefully use a thin plastic strip (the same card, for example) to lift the edge and peel off the film to the point of the bubble. Let the air flow out, smoothing it smoothly.

The screens of smartphones and tablets need protection, even if you have a Motorola Defy with Gorilla Glass. Over time, any screen becomes covered with small scratches and abrasions. Therefore, I strongly recommend gluing a protective film on the screen, because the cost of a protective film is disproportionately less than the cost of replacing glass. Although, of course, the owners of Motorola Defy are luckier; their screens can withstand much greater abuse from their owners.

What you need to successfully apply a screen protector to your phone

A room with little dust, such as a bathroom. Before locking yourself in the bathroom, paranoids and maniacs need to turn on the water and wait until the dust settles (humidity increases, and accordingly dust particles settle).
A credit card, wet lint-free wipes and a dry lint-free cloth will also come in handy (fans of the domestic manufacturer recommend a terry towel).

Wipe the surface of the phone with wet wipes (stains from the wet wipe may remain, the main thing is that there are no stains). Next, we take a terry towel. But I always use the fabric that comes with the protective film.
Do not blow, breathe, or spit on the screen under any circumstances. Only wet wipes and lint-free cloth (terry towel).
Do not use any cleaning agents or alcohol-containing substances.
After cleaning the screen, we take the protective film and begin the sticker process.
The protective film consists of three layers. Actually from the protective film itself for the screen and the “shirt”, one additional layer on each side.
As a rule, stickers are attached to the film on two different sides. One of them marks the side facing the smartphone screen (can be called Step1 and has a blue color), the second indicates the outer side of the protective film (can be called Step2 and has a different color from the first side).
We apply the film in place and fix it with tape on one side, preferably a long one, so that the film has no chance of moving during the sticking process. We get something like a door. “Open” and “close” several times, making sure that the film fits correctly on the screen.
Wipe the phone screen again with a dry, lint-free cloth (terry towel).
“Open the door” and pull the blue sticker Step1 - peel off the auxiliary layer of protective film a couple of centimeters.
“Close the door” and press the released film against the screen. We place the card parallel to the plane of the screen and straighten the film, squeezing out air bubbles.
Slowly and gradually detach the auxiliary layer of the protective film from the side of the screen, and at the same time evenly press the plastic card onto the surface and level the film. Watch for air bubbles. They shouldn't exist. The main thing is patience. And everything will work out. For those who don’t understand, watch the video again.
And finally, don’t forget to remove the second auxiliary layer of the “shirt” from the protective film on the outside. When I first glued a protective film onto the Motorola Defy screen, I unknowingly spent a whole month with an auxiliary layer on the outside of the protective film. And then I wondered for a long time why it was so cloudy, and why my fingers glide so poorly across the screen :)
