Gadgets from google. Google Desktop - Windows widgets I still use today

You want visitors to be able to find on the pages of your site current news, weather forecast, calendar, games and others interesting elements?
One way to get this wealth to the site is to use free library Google gadgets .

What are Google gadgets?
Gadget, translated from English, means “device, technical novelty, trinket.”
Gadgets are small program scripts that offer you dynamic content, placed on any web page, such as: currency converter, calendar, to-do list, various calculators (for example, shipping cost calculator), news, games, open chats, etc. With the help of gadgets you can revive your pages and make them more interesting.

Choose a gadget.
Google's gadget library offers a huge number of all kinds of gadgets in categories: news, tools, communications, entertainment and games, finance, sports, lifestyle, technology and new materials. You can look through these categories and choose a gadget that suits the theme of your site.

We get the code for Google gadgets.
For example, select the Google gadget - "Calendar-informer".

In the window that opens, configure the calendar to match the site design.
The settings may differ in different gadgets. Most often, it is possible to add your own name for the gadget. The size of the gadget can also be edited.
All changes you make can be seen immediately.
When you're done with the settings, click "Get Button Code."
The code will be displayed in the same window, just below the gadget in a rectangle, as shown in the figure.

Copy the code (make sure you copy it).

How to insert html code on Blogspot explained

Download Google program Desktop with an archive of widgets. Unpack the archive, install and run the program. In the settings, enable: “sidebar” and “always on top of other windows”. Install widgets by running the corresponding files with the gg extension - they will appear in the sidebar.

Here are some of my favorite Widgets:

1. Gmail widget. It is fully functional, all basic functions mail client always in sight and one click away - you can: reply, search, write new letters, view correspondence, view any folders. When a new email appears in Gmail, it automatically appears in the widget. This is very convenient and reduces a lot of clicks when actively working in Gmail - existence on your Google computer Desktop is already justified by this widget alone.

I even redirected mine corporate mail on Gmail. If you only use Outlook, you often don’t find out about emails right away. You always need it to be running and you need to open it every time to read the letter.

Since January 2014, this gadget has stopped working. If anyone finds a way to make it work, be sure to write in the comments.

2. Google Calendar widget. You can create events in one click: “Create a new event” and write, for example, “Dinner with Mikhail tomorrow at 11.00.” The widget will recognize the time and the word “tomorrow” and will correctly add the event to your Google calendar. If you click on “View Calendar”, it will open in the browser. This calendar naturally syncs with your Android devices.

3. Google Docs widget. You can open, search, download and create documents. The last function is broken, but it's easy to fix.

Install the extension for Firefox - Redirector and create a rule in its settings:
Example URL: https://docs.google.com/MiscCommands?command=newdoc
Include Pattern: https://docs.google.com/MiscCommands?command=newdoc
Redirect To: https://docs.google.com/document/create
Pattern Type: Wildcard

4. Search Widget allows you to search anywhere and from a large number options.

5. Other widgets: clocks, exchange rates, news, RSS widgets, calculator, weather, pictures, system monitors, file managers. I added them to the archive in case they come in handy for someone. Before it was closed, a great variety of Widgets were developed for the panel (although most of them were useless), but they all also sunk into oblivion and even finding them is already problematic.

Of all of them, I need the Weather Widget, but it stopped working - if anyone can restore its functionality or find a replacement, I will be grateful. If you open the Widget file in Notepad, you can edit the code there - it is more or less simple.

Google Desktop lost support and became unavailable for download on September 14, 2011. Support and development of widgets for Windows 7 was also discontinued, but there were never truly usable widgets there. And now, it seems, there are no such programs on Large Computers - although, as Android has shown, widget gadgets are convenient.

If you know more similar programs, write in the comments.
